The Swollen Fox has announced a special 3-year anniversary concert at PhilaMOCA on July 11th with TJ Kong & the Atomic Bomb, Swift Technique and Shark Tape. Since its beginnings, the local music blog has diligently and thoroughly covered Philadelphia music scene happenings and now runs the comprehensive XPN Concert Calendar in addition to hosting shows (like July 19th’s collaboration with XPN). Watch Tin Bird Choir perform WXPN’s lunchtime buskers’ series at The Porch at 30th Street Station

The Chester County-based folk group Tin Bird Choir performed in a stripped down two-piece configuration for this weeks’ installment of the WXPN lunchtime buskers’ series at The Porch at 30th Street Station. The band mixes poppy harmonies with the acoustic troubadour tradition, and is releasing its Kickstarter-funded second record next month. The band’s CD release party will be June 15th at Steel City Coffeehouse in Phoenixville. Watch a video of them performing below, and be on the lookout for next week’s installment of the series featuring The Districts.

Grammy-winning and critically revered American folk performer Patty Griffin makes a Philadelphia appearance next month, headlining Verizon Hall at The Kimmel Center. Griffin is on tour in support of her seventh record, American Kid, released this month on New West Records, and this week we’re giving away a pair of tickets to the show on Wednesday the 6th of June. Just leave a comment below with your favorite Patty Griffin song and we’ll announce a winner next Thursday afternoon the 30th.

The Key Studio Sessions: Market East

The guys of Market East clearly have a thing for the warmer months of the year. There was “Marielle,” the rhapsody over cherry red lips and beach afternoons that opens their debut EP (check it out performed for Out of Town Films here). There are the languid, easygoing arrangements and breezy Brian Wilson-style vocal harmonies that pepper their songs. And now their is Children of Summer, their new EP and a sonic step forward for the trio of Kurt Cain-Walther (vocals), Max Perla (vocals, drums) and Vincent John (vocals, guitar). The EP gets its official release next month and celebrates on June 8th at MilkBoy with a stacked lineup; Joey Sweeney and the Long Hair Arkestra, Night Panther, Mohican and Former Belle. Last week, while the Non-COMMvention was raging at WXPN HQ, we took the Key Studio Sessions on location to Studio A in South Philly to record a few live tracks with Market East. Two of the performances you hear below are new tracks from the forthcoming EP – you’ll recognize “Evergreen” from our premiere the other week – and one is a cover that needs no introduction. Watch Philly rapper Taylor Dunn flow in various center city locales in “Water”

Late last year, Philly rapper Taylor Dunn released his latest mixtape, On the Contrary; this week, we got a music video for the single “Water.” In sweeping camera shots around various recognizable (and sometimes not-so-recognizable) center city locales, Dunn – who is a LaSalle basketball player in another life – delivers his free associative, lively rhymes over a punchy beat, owning his hometown and celebrating its grandeur as quickly as its scuffs. We’re very excited to have Philadelphia’s DRGN King on the lineup for this year’s XPoNential Music Festival. Their Paragraph Nights LP, released on Bar / None Records earlier this year, is stylish and catchy, and they put on one heck of a live show – something nicely captured by the Out of Town Films crew with their most recent video. The filmmakers explain it like so:

Two weeks ago, we invited local Philly band DRGN King to come play at Girard Hall after their show at Kung Fu Necktie. The plan was to have them play acoustically and to have a few people over to watch the performance. Well, things didn’t go exactly as planned and for the better. The acoustic set turned into a full on electric set and the few people turned into many people. So basically it was a mini-show.

The police were lurking outside since it was midnight on a Thursday and DRGN King were playing pretty loudly. They only had time for two songs. One of which was “Holy Ghost”, a song apparently about looking like Jesus.

Coming out of the suburbs of Philadelphia, NONA are a pop / punk trio formed by former Spraynard drummer Pat Ware, guitarist / vocalist Mimi Gallagher and bassist / vocalist Michael Haller. The local band has drawn comparisons to The Replacements (for their honest and personal lyrics) and the Smashing Pumpkins (for their larger-than-life riffs) and turned in a killer opening set at Plow United’s reunion / release show earlier this year. With stories anchored in the experiences of suburban life, NONA is like that little voice inside your head that sticks with you through all the changes, disappointment and confusion.

With their debut Through the Head being released in June via Mandible Records, NONA announced they will put the full LP up on their Bandcamp tomorrowas a name-your-own-price download. Philadelphia-via-Austin outfit Literature open for Pet Milk at MilkBoy tonight. The psych / pop quartet released their debut album Arab Spring in January 2012 and followed it up with a 7″ single “Tie Dye” a year later. For their recent Key Studio Session, Literature recorded the single alongside four new songs – check out the full session here. Tickets and information can be found here. The Bailey Hounds perform at Ortlieb’s Lounge. The local dark-folk band will release a new album on May 28th called All the Blood in the World. The six-song record follows up the Hounds’ 2011 debut full-length Along the Gallows. Last year, The Bailey Hounds found a performance space that matched their brand of folk music quite well: Laurel Hill Cemetery. They’ll be revisiting the site on June 8th but see them first tonight when they open for The Futurebirds. Tickets and information for the 21+ show can be found here. XPN welcomes Paul Kelly to the Tin Angel. The Australian singer-songwriter is touring behind his 2012 LP Spring and Fall, released through his own label. The new record is his nineteenth studio effort and first of new material in five years following 2007′s Stolen Apples. Kelly has won several Australian music awards and was inducted to the Australian Recording Industry Association hall of fame in 2007. Tickets and information for tonight’s show can be found here. City Hall Presents free music series begins May 29 with Summer performances from Kurt Vile, Dice Raw, Alo Brasil, Norwegian Arms, Cheers Elephant and more

Cit Hall Presents begins its new season next Wednesday, May 29 with Philly based Brazilian band Alo Brasil in the City Hall Courtyard at 5:30PM. City Hall Presents is a series of free performances that showcases the diversity and richness of the Philadelphia performing arts community. The events are free and take place every Wednesday at 5:30 in the City Hall Courtyard. WXPN has curated several of events this Summer including the opening event with Alo Brasil, followed by Cheers Elephant on June 5, and Andrew Lipke with the Azreal Quartet on July 10. There will also be a special Make Music Philly edition of City Hall Presents on Friday, June 21 featuring Norwegian Arms and the Jazz Orchestra of Philadelphia. WXPN’s Dan Reed will be broadcasting live from the City Hall Courtyard next Wednesday starting at 4PM for the kick off of the series with Alo Brasil.

Other highlights of the season include: The Philadelphia School of Circus Arts on June 19, Illstyle & Peace on June 12, Dice Raw & Company on August 7, and the series closes with a special performance from Kurt Vile. Go here for more information and the complete schedule.

Say What? Souls Of Mischief playing Underground Arts on June 27

Has it really been 20 years since the hip-hop group Souls of Mischief released their classic 93 ’til Infinity? It sure has. Not familiar? Well, don’t be so quick to run to iTunes for the record. Sadly, you won’t find it there; nor on Spotify or emusic. The Oakland, Cali rappers – A-Plus, Opio, Phesto and Tajai – members of the Hieroglyphics collective – released 93 which was critically acclaimed for it’s unique mix of eclectic samples (Jack Bruce, Rotary Connection, Traffic, Freddie Hubbard, George Benson) and the charismatic fluidity of the rappers who provided a post-Low End Theory-esque alternative to the G-funk and gangster rap coming out of the West Coast during the early 90′s. The album is a singular important moment of the West Coast underground rap scene of its time. There’s bound to be some heavy hip-hop nostalgia in the room at Underground Arts when the Souls play the album in its entirety (plus additional material) at Underground Arts on Thursday, June 27. Local saloon-style rock band Low Cut Connie found themselves at the center of attention in a Chicago bowling alley a few weeks ago after getting a call from President Obama’s media staff. Fans of Low Cut Connie, campaign staffers Mia Sorensen and Christopher Markos offered to film the band performing a couple of live, pop-up songs at Diversey Rock N’ Bowl near Logan Square. “Boozophilia” (which charted at #31 in Rolling Stone’s top 50 songs of 2012) takes place in the crowded North Side alley while the boys serenaded a line of traffic in the parking lot for “Cat n’ Cream.” You can catch Low Cut Connie at a pair of non-pop-up shows this summer, first at Appel Farm on June 1st and then at Underground Arts on August 3rd. Scottish garage rockers Paws playing a free show at Morgan’s Pier on 6/12

Scottish garage pop rockers Paws have announced a free show at Morgan’s Pier on June 12th with We Were Promised Jetpacks. The trio made their fuzz rock debut last year with Cokefloat on FatCat Records and were charismatic enough at this year’s SXSW to land on The Key’s 10 Bands We Loved at SXSW list. Likely influenced by Pavement, Weezer and perhaps Dinosaur Jr, Paws create short and sweet sing-a-long nuggets that will get any crowd sweaty. Information for the free show can be found here. Sharply-dressed gospel-funk ensemble The Relatives wrapped up this year’s Non-COMM with a Friday night set of sweet harmonies on the World Cafe Live stage. Hailing from Texas and performing together since 1970, the group just released its first album of original material in 30 years, The Electric World. Singer and songwriter José James and his his impressive backing band brought smooth, jazzy and eclectic sounds to Non-COMM last weekend. James released his album No Beginning, No End on Blue Note Records in January and worked through an assortment of songs from it during his set, as well as a winning cover of Bill Withers’ “Ain’t No Sunshine” (the second cover of it we heard during the Non-COMM weekend). Local tastemaker blog Yvynyl is this month’s Tuesday Tune-Out curator at PhilaMOCA and they’re bringing Philly bands Neighborhood Choir and Avery Rosewater to the stage. Neighborhood Choir is a dream-pop project from Bennett Daniels; you can learn more about him in an interview with The Key here. Avery Rosewater is newish project from seasoned city musicians – check out their interview here. Following the music, Daniels will screen a film to close out the night. The Dead Confederate show with Penrose has been moved from Johnny Brenda’s to MilkBoy to tonight due to a water main break. The Georgia alt-rock band is touring in support of In the Marrow, released last month on its on Spiderbomb Records. Local brother trio Penrose is also promoting a new album – they released Circe in February and were featured on The Key’s Unlocked series. Award winning Blues guitarist and singer Super Chikan and the Fighting Cocks made the trip from his home in Clarksdale, Mississippi to Philadelphia last Thursday, May 16 in a double header Mississippi Blues Project concert as part of WXPN’s Non-COMMvention with the Homemade Jamz Blues Band. Born James Louis Johnson in Darling, Mississippi in 1961, Johnson got his name from working with chickens on his family’s farms, moving around the Mississippi Delta until they settled in Clarksdale. Last Thursday during XPN’s Non-COMMvention, the Tupelo, Mississippi brothers and sister trio, the Homemade Jamz Blues Band, performed in concert with Super Chikan for the final Mississippi Blues Porject concert series. The band performed songs from its new album, Mississippi Hill Country. The band, featuring Ryan (guitar/vocals), Kyle (bass) and Taya (drums), played a fun and spirited set. This is a pretty awesome track from the fun and talented Crutchfield sisters. For Rookie Mag’s “Theme Song” series, Katie (of Waxahatchee) and Allison (of Swearin‘) reinvented Grimes’ bubbling synthesizer racer “Oblivion” as a guitar-rock song, underscoring the 60s pop influences that might not have been as evident before. Check out out below (and compare it against the original after the jump). Waxahatchee plays a free show with Ted Leo and the Pharmacists on July 31, a double-bill of such awesomeness that Morgan’s Pier might just collapse and float away into the Delaware. Swearin’ has no local shows coming up, but we hope to see them again very soon.

Non-COMM Recap: Attitude is everything when Free Energy hits the stage

Philly pop-rock five-piece Free Energy took the stage at maybe not the most opportune moment during Non-COMM. The Lone Bellow had just wrapped up a tremendous set upstairs, and much of the industry crowd was still smoozing with that band; others had skipped the festival entirely to catch their flight home. So to put it politely, there was plenty of room to dance in World Cafe Live’s downstairs when they opened their set with “Electric Fever.” But true to the slogan on his t-shirt, attitude was everything to frontman Paul Sprangers, and he rocked the crowd of about 75 like it was an arena of 7,500. The band’s trademark boisterous performance raged out into the hall and up the stairs, beckoning Non-COMMers inside. And as the band played on, the room filled up nicely. With their new LP Michael Boyd ready for release, Our Griffins have shared a new video for their song “Come and Wake Me Up.” The song is the first taste of the upcoming album from Easton, PA’s DJ Brown and is available as a free download on Our Griffins’ Bandcamp. With hushed vocals and prominent percussion, the song wanders and floats through a gradual crescendo of trembling guitar chords, mirroring the girl wandering through the woods in the accompanying video directed by Brad Kunkle. Awash in moving acoustic arrangements and stunning harmonies, The Lone Bellow captivated the crowd at the 2013 Non-COMMvention. They sang selections from their self-released self-titled debut and packed what appeared to be the entire attendance of Non-COMM into World Cafe Live’s upstairs stage, raising the room’s collective temperature to a fever pitch. On their sixth studio album, Trouble Will Find Me (4AD), the Brooklyn-based band further embrace their ominous personality that seeks to find beauty though sorrow and darkness. The band saw new heights of success following the release of their last album, High Violet, both in terms of record sales and press, and also an ever-growing fan base. With the bar set a little higher this time around, The National are seemingly undaunted of new expectations and utterly focused on harnessing their music persona. It’s clear that on Trouble Will Find Me The National are comfortable and confident in their pursuits. Brothers Bryce & Aaron Dessner whom compose most of the music for the band offer some ambitious, unconventional music timestamps on songs like “Demons” and “Humiliation.” There are songs that simmer into powerfully moving moments like “This is the Last Time” and “Firefly.” And of course, there are points on the album where the band purely flexes their collective muscle and offers anthemic moments like on “Sea of Love,” which offers us the album’s title, and “Graceless.”
