Every month, noted song expert K. Ross Hoffman presents a sampling of fresh specimens for your consideration. Here are his picks for February, 2017.

Happy new(-ish) year!  January tends to be a slow time for new music, as release schedules (and concert calendars) gradually shift back into gear following a generally-observed hibernation around the holidays.  That felt especially true this year, with no major releases dominating the musical conversation the way, for instance, Bowie did in 2016.  (I guess we also had a few other things to pay attention to.)  But there were still a handful of gems to sift through, all well as some promising signs for what’s to come later in the Spring.  The selections below includes a pair of pre-release teasers from disgruntled old geezers, sterling examples of several different strains of soul music, a smattering of political content – sorry, you can’t escape it here either – and the first great pop banger of 2017.

Good Old War, Gabriel Garzón-Montano and The Morelings vibe out at WXPN’s Red Bull Sound Select Show

Chill vibes all around as Good Old War, Gabriel Garzón-Montano and The Morelings performed at The Foundry at The Fillmore on Thursday for the latest Red Bull Sound Select show curated by WXPN.

The Morelings started the night off with some psychedelic tunes, which we recently heard when they visited for a Key Studio Session. Their spacey sounds filled the room as the crowd bobbed their heads and swayed to the music. Gabriel Garzón-Montano then switched it up, giving the night an R&B twist. Joined by a percussionist, Garzón-Montano played keys. The acoustic set really showcased his strong vocals, and he performed songs off of his EP Bishouné: Alma del Hula, including his song “6 8,” which was sampled by Drake Last but not least, Good Old War took the stage as Keith Goodwin led vocals and Dan Schwartz on guitar. Fans were up close and personal against the barrier in front of the intimate stage as the duo performed their folk-pop love ballads.

The Key’s Year-End Mania: K. Ross Hoffman’s megamix dance party for NYE 2017

Year-End Mania is the Key’s annual survey of the things below the surface that made 2017 incredible. In this installment, Key contributor K. Ross Hoffman presents a megamix of 2017 highlights for all your New Year’s dance party needs.

Welcome to my year end mania. My most cherished, and certainly most insane annual personal ritual, every December since 2006 (the year of Girl Talk, not so coincidentally) is to construct a monster mash-up DJ mega-mix of music from the year that was. The idea is for it to serve as a dance party for New Year’s Eve. This year, I’m sharing my mix – finally completed, with just hours to spare – with you.

I think this is my longest New Year’s mix ever. It also ended up being the dirtiest mix I’ve ever made – I’m not sure what that says about this year. As Fever Ray observed perceptively in a track that I didn’t end up including, this country made it hard to fuck in 2017 – still, it was a year in which even Taylor Swift was #readyforit.
