The coolest summer camp that I’ve ever heard of, Girls Rock Philly at El Centro de Estudiantes, has just released their two annual compilations of youth and teen-written music. Each year, campers age 9 to 12 and 13 to 18 work in two different groups to write, record, and perform music inspired by anything they want. And for many of the young people involved, this is their first time playing their instrument of choice. With that in mind, Youth Session and Teen Session collections, released recently on Bandcamp, are super impressive. It’s all about channeling your focus, learning to collaborate with others, and enjoying the all the awesome things that creative collaboration in a recording studio has to offer. Continue reading →

What do Girls Rock Philly and Diet Cig have in common? They both awesomely empower girls, young women, and trans youth by showing them that they can unleash their inner confidence and self reliance through the power of music. So it makes perfect sense that Diet Cig will be headlining the GRP benefit show at PhilaMOCA on May 25th, which also features a lineup of local indie pop outfit, SPORTS, and the young talent of GRP grads, Wolf Pack. Girls Rock Philly releases two new compilations of local talent

Summer Campers at GRP | photo via

Two new rockin’ compilation albums, youth empowerment and music education — what more could you possibly ask for? Girls Rock Philly, a volunteer-based non-profit music and mentoring organization for girls, young women, and trans youth across the greater Philadelphia region, has just released two stellar efforts on their Bandcamp page. The campers (9-12 year old campers make up the Youth Mixtape, while 13-18 year olds created the Teen Sessions) formed bands, wrote songs, performed and recorded them all in the matter of a week. Some campers had never played their instrument before the first day of camp. Sounds like some out of this word School of Rock program doesn’t it? And yet it gets better. Now, everyone can hear for themselves what all the campers devoted their time to while writing, practicing and playing their hearts out. Continue reading →

Girls Rock Philly launched in 2006 and held its first camp in August of 2007 with just 20 campers – including yours truly. The next year, it more than doubled in size, and the organization has been growing ever since. For most of its early years, Girls Rock Philly was entirely run by volunteers; in 2012, Diane Foglizzo became the first paid staff member, and now it has several people on staff in addition to its many volunteers. This has opened up many more opportunities for the organization and year-round programming for youth.
