Listen to Madalean Gauze’s cathartically fun FUNeral EP, see them tonight at Boot & Saddle

Philly rocker Madalean Gauze has a very funny, very true tagline on her Instagram page: “💅🏼 IDC ABT FASHION 💅🏼 .”

This is applicable beyond the jeans-and-t-shirt-and-cat-mask aesthetic of last year’s Cool and Fun EP; it includes “fashion” as far as “what’s cool” or “what the music scene expects you to do.” Like I said earlier this week, Madalean does whatever the heck she wants, she makes art for herself, whether that means launching a stoner doom metal band or releasing an off-the-cuff EP, as she did today with FUNeral. In her band Hemming, singer-guitarist Candice Martello plays yearning, melancholic ballads in a fervent singer-songwriter style; as a solo artist, Madalean Gauze plays energized art rock brimming with riffs and hooks. Together, they turn the volume way up and the tempo way down in the new four-piece band Dreamswell. With a lineup rounded out by Gina Piccari on guitar and Joe Martello on drums, the band lowkey debuted with a few shows last fall at Boot and Saddle and Kung Fu Necktie. Kensington power punk trio Amanda X will bring their high-energy tunes to Boot and Saddle tonight. Comprised of Cat Park on lead guitar, Melissa Brain on drums and Kat Bean on bass, the group doles out hooky guitar riffs, bumping drum grooves and memorable melody lines. This summer, they will release their second full album later this summer, Giant, and based on opening track “Exquisite,” they keep up with their tendency toward dance-able guitar licks, passionate vocal work and well-crafted melodies. Philly singer songwriter Madalean Gauze has always made art on her own terms.

This goes back to the gripping storm of her debut American War — which was, all things considered, was released quietly amid hazy mystery four years ago. Her 2015 follow-up, Sing, was recorded, scrapped and rerecorded until she knew she had it right. Gauze and her band gigged in support of the record into early 2016, and then she went off the grid somewhat, popping up in late autumn to play a few gigs as a member of Candice Martello’s new band Dreamswell.

But we are happy to report today that Madalean Gauze returns this summer with her latest EP, Cool and Fun — and you can watch the music video for its heavy rocking first single, “The Fire,” below. Continue reading →
