We’re very excited for The Districts‘ forthcoming third LP Popular Manipulations around here at Key HQ, especially after watching them slay five new songs from the record at NonCOMM last week. To make their August 11th album release party at Union Transfer even more of an event, the band just announced the openers for the show, and it’s turned into a tremendous all-Philly bill. Now we’re getting another music video for “Cops Come Looking”, and like its predecessor, it does not disappoint. Continue reading →

For a while, the New Years Eve concert scene in Philly was looking a bit bleak. There was one big name — A Sunny Day in Glasgow performing at Johnny Brenda’s — but that was about it. Fortunately, as 2015 winds to a close, more and more shows are starting to trickle onto our radar. Yesterday we announced that Nothing will be playing at Boot & Saddle, and today we bring you even more good news: Punk favorites Creepoid, who released their new album Cemetery Highrise Slum back in June. Listening to a new Spirit of the Beehive song is a lot like putting a puzzle together. Every few bars the band can veer into a new style, redefining your expectations of their artistry.

Their latest single, “hypnic jerks”, the title track of their upcoming LP, seems miles from the sludgy shoegaze of their 2014 debut. It’s stiff and upbeat, shifting between time signatures and musical textures with perfect ease. The detached vocals recall the disaffected post-punk of Parquet Courts, while the offbeat instrumental passages sound inspired by 70’s prog. Continue reading →

Spirit of the Beehive is releasing their third full-length album, Hypnic Jerks in September 2018 via Tiny Engines.
