Experimental pop outfit Animal Collective played a sold-out show at Union Transfer on Friday night. Philly was the group’s first stop on their international tour in support of their tenth studio album, Painting With, which was just released on Friday. Since it’s been four years since Centipede Hz, the crowd couldn’t wait to hear the band’s new music performed live for the very first time. As Avey Tare, Panda Bear, and Geologist delivered an upbeat and energetic set of their textured, psych-pop inspired music, the crowd cheered, moshed, and danced.

Please don’t watch the new Animal Collective video if you are prone to seizures

The video for Animal Collective‘s song “FloriDada,” a bizarro blender of pop music pointillism, opens with a disclaimer. “Viewer discretion is advised – the video has been identified to potentially trigger seizures for people with photosensitive epilepsy.” And while I would argue that the band’s new website design is perhaps more likely to have adverse effects on viewers (warning: click with caution), the video is no less tripped out. It’s got bright neon colors, swirling animation, and imagery reminiscent of a health class on acid. Continue reading →

Tonight’s Concert Picks: Sir Sly at Boot and Saddle, Frightened Rabbit at the Electric Factory, Animal Collective at Union Transfer

sirsly

Alt-pop rockers Sir Sly will electrify the Boot and Saddle stage tonight. The band released its Gold EP back in May. Their sound is poppy and electronic but they contrast it with melancholic lyrics (much like Tegan and Sara’s latest album Heartthrob). Get ticket information here and check out “Ghost” below.
