Philadelphia’s Liz de Lise recalls the jazz-tinged singer-songwriter era of the 1970s – Laura Nyro, Carole King, and of course Joni Mitchell – filtered through production and perspectives into something wholly contemporary. Last year she released the short A songs collection and embarked on a video-a-month project; tonight she headlines Kung Fu Necktie in Fishtown. Tickets and more information on the show can be found at the XPN Concert Calendar. Continue reading →
Archer Spade is the name of an acclaimed experimental music concert series set in and around West Philly and organized by guitarist Nick Millevoi and trombonist Dan Blacksberg. But it’s also the two Philadelphia musicians’ collaborative duo. This month, Millevoi and Blacksberg are launching into 2016 with their Spectrum Ensemble, staging weekly collaborative concerts all around the city with anywhere from a half dozen to 24 other musicians.
Some of the performances are more structured, rehearsed events, while others are strongly improvisatory, and after a preview performance on WKDU late last month (which you can stream below), Archer Spade kicks off the series tomorrow at The Rotunda before traversing the city through South Philly, Germantown and Fishtown. To get a sense what’s in store, I swapped emails with Millevoi and Blacksberg; read our conversation below. Continue reading →
Next month, Archer Spade will present its inaugural festival The Spectrum in South Philadelphia. The two days of workshops and performances focused on improvisational music will feature over a dozen musicians and several approaches to performing; Archer Spade’s Dan Blacksberg and Nick Millevoi will be joined by Eric Carbonara, Kyle Press and Ashley Tini, among others.
You couldn’t exactly call Miles Archer and Sam Spade one of fiction’s great teams; after all, Archer’s death helps to set the events of The Maltese Falcon in motion. Dan Blacksberg and Nick Millevoi’s partnership as Archer Spade has fortunately been more productive. Under that name alone, they’re a new music trombone/guitar duo; a commissioning entity that has generated works by the likes of Gene Coleman, Roscoe Mitchell, and Dave Soldier; and a concert series now entering into a new partnership with Ars Nova Workshop. Local experimental duo Archer Spade (Dan Blacksberg and Nick Millevoi) will perform the world premeire of “TCHMENTREACH,” a piece they commissioned from prolific avant-garde metal guitarist Mick Barr, in West Philadelphia tonight. In addition to the premiere, Barr and composer / clarinetist Jeremiah Cymerman will perform solo sets of their dark, twisting improvisations. More information on the show at The Rotunda can be found here. Watch videos of the performers below and learn more about Mick Barr in the 5049 Podcast with Jeremiah Cymerman here.
Philadelphia guitarist Chris Forsyth has shared a two-track LP on his Soundcloud, displaying once more how varied, but consistently on-point, his playing can be. Solar Motel Parts I-IV bob and weave, explode and retract and fly into the far corners of the cerebral stratosphere before circling back in for a pleasingly distorted, white noise coda. It’s not clear whether this recording will be made available in physical form yet, but you can stream it in full below. Chris Forsyth will be performing at Studio 34 on March 16th for the Archer Spade Performance Series; more information can be found here.
The Archer Spade Performance Series returns this month with performances by Mary Lattimore / Jeff Zeigler Duo and Adam Caine at Studio 34. Conceived by local composers and musicians Dan Blacksberg and Nick Millevoi (collectively known as Archer Spade), the Performance Series is a monthly occurance that brings avant-garde, improvisational and experimental musicians to Philadelphia. January 19th will see Philadelphia’s harpist-in-residence Mary Lattimore (Thurston Moore, Kurt Vile) collaborate with producer and musician Jeff Zeigler (Uniform Recording, Arc in Round) in anticipation of Lattimore’s solo record, set to be released in February. Opening up the night will be New York solo guitarist Adam Caine. More information for the all-ages evening can be found here. Watch Lattimore and Zeigler perform at August’s Kensington Picnic below, then check out the Archer Spade Performance Series line-up as scheduled so far.
