Creepoid, Amanda X and more will play the 2016 River City Festival

Creepoid | via rivercityfestival.org

The 9th annual River City Festival is bringing a day-long roster of local talent to Fishtown’s Penn Treaty Park on Saturday, October 8th — and the lineup runs the gamut from blues and folk to punk and psych.

Headlining the day are Creepoid – who have founding guitarist PeteJoe Urban back in the fold – and Amanda X – who have been debuting some sick new jams of late. The day begins with Deb Callahan Blues Band and singer-songwriter staple Ben Arnold. In between, T.J. Kong and the Atomic Bomb will do the gravely Tom Waits jawn and Creem Circus will channel T-Rex. One thing we should aways remember about Creepoid – as dark and heavy and occasionally macabre as they get, they’re family. And we don’t say that just because vocalist / bassist Anna Troxell is wed to drummer Pat Troxell; their bandmates Sean Miller and founding guitarist PeteJoe Urban all grew up together in the Montgomery County burbs – they’re literal lifelong friends.

Which is why we’re excited to note that Urban is back in the fold. Continue reading →

Love On The Streets, or more affectionately known as LOTS Fest, is “reloaded” and ready to go after being rained out in May. It’s LOTS Fest’s second year running, after debuting last year in an effort to “reimagine skateboarding in the city through art and culture.” The fest will be held on Saturday, July 9th at Paine’s Park, on Martin Luther King Jr. Drive and the Benjamin Franklin Parkway. Proceeds from the event will benefit Franklin’s Paine Skatepark Fund, which aims to “rebuild and diversify city spaces and experiences that foster the love of skateboarding and urban creativity.” Continue reading →

This time last year Creepoid were prepping for the release of Cemetery Highrise Slum, an album the psych / rock outfit recorded during a year spent in Savannah. Twelve months later we’re still digging the songs, especially the darkly sparkling “Shaking,” which is why we’re happy to premiere a visual accompaniment to that track this week.

For a while, the New Years Eve concert scene in Philly was looking a bit bleak. There was one big name — A Sunny Day in Glasgow performing at Johnny Brenda’s — but that was about it. Fortunately, as 2015 winds to a close, more and more shows are starting to trickle onto our radar. Yesterday we announced that Nothing will be playing at Boot & Saddle, and today we bring you even more good news: Punk favorites Creepoid, who released their new album Cemetery Highrise Slum back in June. Space out with former Creepoid guitarist PeteJoe Urban in Noema

PeteJoe Urban always brought a meditative sensibility and distinctive guitar tone to Philly psych-punks Creepoid. Now that he’s stepped away from their ranks (and more conventionally structured songs – which are not conventional in the slightest but, you know, by comparison), his music opens up into a much broader sonic space.

Last week, Urban released the first EP from Noema, his instrumental psych-guitar collaboration with tour buddy Sean Sterns of Grand Rapids noise outfit Shores. The second EP is slated for a January digital release, with cassette release to follow, and a third EP later in 2016.

“This project was an idea long in the making,” Urban tells us. Continue reading →

Trial By Fire: Creepoid, No Devotion and more break in The Fillmore’s Foundry

The Foundry at The Fillmore was first christened with music on Sunday via a Questlove DJ set, but it was not until last night that guitars amplifiers echoed within its 400 capacity room. And boy, was it a raucous affair of four bands – with Philly’s Creepoid in the headliner slot – destroying and reforming the essence of rock for a modest, but certainly excitable Philly crowd.
