Eric Slick of Dr. Dog has been producing a plethora of multifaceted extracurricular work, from last year’s kickass White Reindeer LP from his band Lithuania to solo work under his own name.

We have more of the latter this week, as Slick just released Sad Reality on Bandcamp, a 2014 demo version of his album Palisades. In a Facebook post, Slick discussed a “tranquil” period of isolation in which he lived alone in Asheville, NC, drawing inspiration from nature and descending so deeply into his artistic process that he forgot to eat for days at a time. Dr. Dog drummer, Lithuania rocker, solo Eric Slick extraordinaire — now let’s add string quartet composer to the list because why the heck not.

Expanding his personal project a tad further, on December 19th, Philly’s resident renaissance musician will be performing as Eric Slick & Friends to debut his “Bullfighter EP” to the world; which, as announced in the show’s Facebook event page, will feature additions of a string quartet. In just over a month we’ll have Eric Slick‘s debut solo LP Palisades in our hands, an exciting moment for us and for the Dr. Dog drummer. He’s shared some digital material over the years but this will be the first official, cohesive release, and it’s proving to be worth the wait. We heard a lead single called “You Became the Light” back in February, and this week Slick shared a video for “The Dirge.”

Philadelphia’s Eric Slick has what you might call Restless Musician’s Syndrome; he’s always making song, whether it be with Dr. Dog (where he plays drums) or Lithuania (which he co-fronts on guitar and vox with Dominic Angellela) or under his own name. His latest record Palisades is on the way (listen to the song “No” here) and Slick went on a small autumn tour this month to preview songs from it. Joining him onstage at Boot and Saddle on Wednesday night were Ricardo Lagomasino on drums, Zannie Owens on guitar/keys, and Andrew Black on bass. Check out photos from the set by Koof Ibi Umoren (of Random Tea Sessions fame) — for more updates on Slick’s doings, keep tabs on his Facebook. Continue reading →

Local outfit Myrrias celebrate the release of a new record at Johnny Brenda’s tonight. The dream/psych rockers just dropped their debut LP Spectra last week after streaming the magnetic “PEAK,” but the album comes at a time of transition for the band as well – they’ll be taking some time off for the next few months to write new material and focus on their growing families. Listen to “PEAK” below and pick up tickets here for the 21+ show with Valley Exit (also releasing a record), Long Spells, and a DJ set by Suburban Living.

Something wicked good this way comes. With autumn magic in the crisp evening air, the mood on Friday at PhilaMOCA was just right for a stacked bill of four Philly bands to transform into haunted visages of their former selves and take the stage by force. Put on by your friends and mine, the breezy power-poppers in Hurry presented the Hurry Halloween Spectacular — a veritable Hurry-ween. Continue reading →

Tis the season of Yacht Rock, and what better way to celebrate than with a Steely Dan tribute show chock full of some of our favorite artists?

Eric Slick and The Talkhouse curated Reelin’ In the Years: a Tribute to Steely Dan as a spin-off of an in-depth piece the Dr. Dog drummer wrote, and they’ve wrangled members of Speedy Ortiz, Laser Background, The So So Glos, and Ava Luna, along with Ian Sweet, Twiga, Bad Faces and Slick’s own Dan-influenced Lithuania to be a part of it.
