Beyond the world of pumpkin spiced everything, October means The Fire‘s annual Northern Liberties Fall Festival, which is set to happen this Saturday from noon to 8:30. Yes, you’ll find pumpkin carving and food there, but it will also feature incredible music from Philly’s rock, punk and soul communities.

Among the talented performers playing the free concert is local rapper, MH the Verb who will be celebrating the release of his new record alongside Philly blues rockers Ill Fated Natives, the funky RoseMary Fiki, and DJ Sylo headlining the night. Continue reading →

Just last week Philly hip-hop and R&B singer Joie Kathos stopped WXPN to play a handful of songs for us as a part of the Key Studio Sessions, and it was, well, awesome. We highly suggest you give the recordings a listen and if you like what you hear — which we are pretty confident you will — then you can check Kathos tonight at Kung Fu Necktie when she opens for Philly-area vocalist James. For more information on the show head over to the XPN Concert Calendar.  Continue reading →

Like I said the other day: one thing Philly music industry startup RECphilly is amazing at is inspiring artists to collaborate. We saw that happen the first time we worked with them on a live audience Key Studio Session this summer; we saw it happen in a bigger way the second time around, which we present to you today.

Featuring an intimate crowd of about 50 fans and two rising stars of the Philly hip-hop scene, Joie Kathos and Armani White (plus a set from Milton and his band, which we’ll release a little later this fall), it was a hugely positive night of charismatic performance and impressive skill. And that’s before the improv cypher even began. Continue reading →

Alabama Shakes released Sound & Color, one of the most popular pure-rock albums of the year, back in April. They continue to support this album with a show at the Mann Center tonight along with specials guests Drive-By Truckers. Led by talented and overall badass lead singer Brittany Howard, the band matured with their second album, exploring new realms of pop and soul with relentless energy. It won’t be long before they are selling out arena shows, so you might want to catch them tonight while they are still playing somewhat personal venues. For more information on tonight’s show, go to the XPN Concert Calendar. Continue reading →

After an amazing time curating our Red Bull Sound Select last night with Bilal, we’re psyched to see the lineup announcement for next month’s installment. Curated by Veteran Freshman, the September 17 show at Underground Arts is headlined by singer / songwriter / dancer triple-threat GoGo Morrow.  She has been pretty busy lately with her catchy single “Like A Trap Boy” being released a couple weeks ago and a handful of performances scheduled throughout the fall.  She’ll be joined on the 17th by fellow Philly artists Joie Kathos – a rapper who just released the FLOATERS EP – and singer Rosemary Fiki, DJ Diamond Kuts and Sonny the Host. Buzzing Irish artist SOAK plays Boot & Saddle tonight. Following up last year’s single release “Blud,” Bridie Monds Watson released her debut full-length Before We Forgot How to Dream earlier this month via Rough Trade. Her musical style is both intimate and expansive, lyrically hitting on nuanced emotions while incorporating strings, samples and atmospheric production. Check out the video for Sea Creatures below and pick up tickets for tonight’s show with Abi Reimold here.

Joie Kathos releases video for “Gone,” proves that she was born to entertain

“I’m just trying to make more of a change than a dollar in pennies”

With lyrics like this it’s no wonder why local rapper Joie Kathos doesn’t think she has anything to prove and instead has a lot to share with the world. In the way Kathos combines rapping and dancing you would think that you’re watching the offspring of Left Eye and Big Daddy Kane whenever she performs. Continue reading →
