Self Defense Family headline Boot & Saddle tonight. The band is an international collective of musicians with roots in Philadelphia, London, Los Angeles and Albany. They released an LP in 2013 called Try Me, landing somewhere between the heavy punk of Pissed Jeans and the enlightened punk of Sonic Youth with occasional surprises of indie rock (specifically “Mistress Appears at a Funeral”). The band followed-up that effort with two 7″ splits this year, one with Touche Amore and another with Creative Adult (also playing tonight). Watch their video for “Tithe Pig” below and pick up tickets for the 21+ show here.

If there’s one thing that Philly has shown us in the past year, is that the local R&B scene is on the rise in a big way. Whether you’re listening to their music or watching them perform, Philly R&B singers show a plethora of potential and talent. On Thursday, March 5th, Philadelphia’s Mprynt, Good Girl and Jermey Isaac will be shutting the house down with their voices at the Theater of Living Arts and show why their city gave a start some of the greatest singers the world has every heard. Here’s a cool collab among several local hip-hop scene heads that came across our desk today. For his new single “Into The Future” – which loosely interpolates Steve Miller Band’s “Fly Like an Eagle” – Philly MC Sanity taps Tech N9ne alum Nesto The Owner for a verse and Tyce, formerly of R&B buzzmakers MPrynt, to deliver the hook. The song is catchy and thoughtful, and the video is a look at the world through the eyes of a child wandering his neighborhood with headphones on.  Continue reading →

The Key Studio Sessions: Good Girl

It doesn’t take long to get hooked on infectious Philly R&B group Good Girl; I’d say about 60 seconds into their 2014 mixtape 90s Kinda Love was about all I needed. As somebody who grew up in the 90s, this charismatic four-piece captures everything that was great about TLC, Destiny’s Child, En Vogue, Janet Jackson…all those feel-good pop jams that soundtracked our bus rides and school dances. But as much as the ladies – Morgan, Megan, Arielle and Courtney – play off of this sense of nostalgia, you don’t need to be pushing 40 to appreciate what they’re doing. Continue reading →

It’s always good for a DJ to be versatile so that he or she can please any crowd that’s put in front of them. Plus it makes their mixes more interesting because the crowd will never know where the DJ is going with the music. Maybe that’s why DJ Lean Wit It has made a name for himself in his hometown of Philadelphia.

DJ Lean Wit It’s skills have not only made him quite popular in the tri-state area, but they’ve also led him to become the official touring DJ for Selina Carrera and Motown’s MPrynt, and a resident DJ for RedBull’s Play and Destroy Competition, Heineken Green Room and Thursdays at Pub Webb.
