Philly and Minneapolis-based label Dirty Pillows just released a compilation featuring local artists from both of their homes. Titled ACLU Benefit Vol. 1 Phl/Mpls, the compilation is the first in a series of benefit releases that will split its tunes between two cities, and then donate the proceeds to those local community’s ACLU chapters.

Things got loud at the final Free at Noon concert of 2016. Philadelphia power trio Purling Hiss, fronted by dynamic guitarist Mike Polizze, tore through a 45-minute set centered around its eighth studio LP High Bias but drew from all corners of its career. The set opened with a burst of feedback and then “Learning Slowly,” an infectious song from its 2014 record Weirdon. The song is built around a racing motorcycle riff and is a testament to the band’s sense of heritage — behind the squeals and squalor, Polizze and the Hiss write songs strongly informed by classic 70s rock riffs and structures.
As the set proceeded, that contrast was underscored — howling noise of cuts like “3000 AD” and the cranky “Teddy’s Servo Motors” sat alongside poppy burners like “Fever” and the sing-along-able “Follow You Around.” There’s a bit of a Sex Pistols sneer in High Bias, and a touch of 80s college rock — evidenced by the band’s cover of “Green Eyes” by Hüsker Dü. In true American fashion, Philadelphia noise-pop outfit Purling Hiss is set to release a self-titled ale to celebrate their newest release High Bias off of Drag City Records.

The LP, Better Heavens, is a dedication to their late bassist Corey Bernard and is slated to drop on November 4th via Lame-O Records. We’re highlighting new music from Philadelphia’s Purling Hiss this week, so get ready to rock out.
The trio released their new LP High Bias this past Friday. They’re a band that seems to keep a steady stream of material flowing, as this marks their third record for Drag City in just four years. And yet they never feel thrown together or haphazard – everything Mike Polizze and comany put to tape is patiently coaxed out of a collection of years-old riffs and spur-of-the-moment jams. For its part, “Fever” showcases Hiss’ layered, full sound that is still nuanced. We get scuzzy guitars and a barrage of percussion right out the gate, with Polizze’s garage-fi vocals slinking in amidst howls and solos. Continue reading →
After the moodier, psychedelic explorations of 2014′ Weirdon, Purling Hiss is ready to rawk again. Previous singles “Fever” and “3000 AD” predicted an album that would be both a return to form for the band and a step forward in fidelity, and on this year’s excellent High Bias, we got just that and then some.
Purling Hiss have been known for their righteous guitar shredding and powerful rock grooves for a while now, but they’ve never sounded so good doing it. They’ve reunited with prolific Philly producer Jeff Ziegler for the first time since 2013’s Water on Mars, but where that album was shrill and crowded, High Bias is massive and sprawling. This isn’t to say Purling Hiss has lost their edge by any means; if anything, they’ve sharpened it to create an album that sounds like a mature culmination of all their years as a band. The whir and steady crackle of coffee grinders hard at work fill Higher Grounds, a small trendy coffee shop in Northern Liberties. It is the kind of place that revels in its unique blend of styles. The flea market seating, the posters and paintings and art pieces whose only discernible style is a difficult to define panache. It has a confidence and intentionality that resists coming off as anything but genuine and patiently accumulated through years of collection. Sitting across from me towards the back of the shop is Mike Polizze, front man and songwriter for Purling Hiss, whose aesthetic, and brand new album High Bias due out October 14, feel equally as earned. Philly locals Purling Hiss continues their winning streak with “3000 AD”, the second single off their forthcoming LP, High Bias. Much like with the previously released “Fever”, the band forgoes some of the sunnier explorations of 2014’s Weirdon in favor of pure, unadulterated viscera.
The band has always sounded heavy enough to warrant its own orbit, but this time around, they’ve upped the ante on the low end. Kiel Evertt’s bass throbs and Ben Leaphart’s drums boom like they never have before, punctuating Mike Polizze’s scorching guitar as it casts the track into a thick cloud of toxic smoke.
