Modern R&B is at a good place with voices like Jordan Brown continuing to creep out from the woodwork of the underground scene. Brown, who was featured on RDJ2’s recent album Dame Fortune, has finally come out with his own project Where We Were via SoulBounce. If you’re into RJD2, you know the electronic producer / songwriter is big on collaborating. Even longer than his list of studio albums (which clocks in at 10 with this year’s Dame Fortune) is his list of production work, and the names are big: Aesop Rock, Mos Def, Massive Attack, Elbow, Yo La Tengo and Son Little just scratch the surface. So when he started work on the new project, the Columbus native and former Philadelphia resident called up some old (and new) friends to fill in the gaps. The result is a synchronous, soulful album full of twists, turns and eclectic surprises.
We spoke with RJ about how his production and songwriting methodology has changed from 2002’s Deadringer debut to Dame Fortune, his long list of Philly collaborators and what it’s like to be back in Columbus. Read the interview below, and see the master in action at Union Transfer on Saturday, May 28th.
Funkmaster general RJD2 released his new album Dame Fortune back in March, and yesterday he shared a new music video for the track, “The Sheboygan Left.”
The video depicts a girl and a boy running around the New York City subway system while they dance from car to car, all the time followed by a cloud that is not unlike the smoke monster from Lost. The song’s exploding beats reflect off of the several different walks of life that the duo dances past underground. Continue reading →

Music producer extraordinaire RJD2 has released “We Come Alive”, yet another great new song from his upcoming record Dame Fortune.
“We Come Alive,” which features Son Little (Aaron Livingston) on vocals, kicks open with a pounding drum fill before the keys and Livingston’s earnest vocals enter. The song, a soulful R&B jam laden with warm reverb, features honest lyrics such as “feeling deaf, dumb, and blind” and “find me when the smoke has cleared.”
It is important to note that Livingston is credited as Son Little on this song, Continue reading →
Philly producer/beatmaster RJD2 has shared a new track from his upcoming album, Dame Fortune.
RJD2 originally gained widespread notice when his song “A Beautiful Mine” was used as the theme song for the hit TV show, Mad Men. “The Sheboygan Left” feels familiar to “Beautiful Mine,” but instead of minor synths and dark strings, RJ utilizes funk bass and belting horns, creating a new potential theme song worthy of Mad Men‘s eventual 70’s spin off. The instrumental also carries traits of 90’s hip-hop, jubilant and full of excess. Continue reading →
