SoFAR Philly and Amnesty International support “Give a Home” with Esperanza Spalding, Shamir and Maitland

On September 20th, Amnesty International partnered with the living room concert series SoFAR Sounds to hold a series of benefits across the world. 1,000 artists were booked to play 300 shows in 60 countries to raise money and awareness for the world’s refugees through Amnesty’s Give a Home project.

While SoFAR typically keeps their lineups under wraps, for “A Global Day of Secret Gigs,” the artists were released early, and it featured big names like Ed Sheeran in Washington, D.C. ,Hozier in Dublin, and BØRNS in Los Angeles.

On SoFAR Philly’s bill was Esperanza Spalding, Shamir and Maitland. The show was located in an ornate office building just off of Rittenhouse Square. Walking up three flights of carpeted stairs felt like walking through an antique mansion — SoFAR always chooses the coolest spots. Everyone got close and cozy as the sun set over the park and the bands began to set up. Continue reading →

SoFAR Sounds have been curating intimate living room shows in Philadelphia for five years now, bringing touring and local bands together in a kind of under-wraps-until-the-last-minute way that has resulted in some pretty spectacular performances. To celebrate this milestone, SoFAR Philly coordinators Carolyn Lederach and Ken Winneg have shared their top Sofar memories with us, from rooftop shows in Center City to holiday shows on a South Street balcony. Read what they have to say below, and be a part of the 5th anniversary event on Saturday, November 12th in South Philly by signing up here (hurry though, the early show is already sold out!).

On the latest episode of the 25 O’Clock podcast, host Dan Drago shifts his sights from the scene to behind the scenes as he welcomes Carolyn Lederach to the show. Best known as curator of the mothly SoFAR Philly living room concert series, Lederach has also made a name for herself locally as a photographer, blogger and – more recently – an artist manager working with The Sun Flights and Josh Miller.

On the show, Lederach and Drago have a wide-ranging conversation. They discuss the nature of her shows and how it can be a more fulfilling experience to see an artist in a living room with 50 attentive people than in a club with 200 chatty, drunken people. Continue reading →

Ottsville, Pa.’s Upperfields encompasses a laid-back, psych-folk sound that shines through in the new video for “Untethered Bells,” the final track from their latest, earthy EP, titled Waterways.

The four-piece performed “Untethered Bells” (catch the official EP version here) for SoFAR Philly, and the moody yet soothing track is reminiscent of tunes from bands like Fleet Foxes or The Shins. But overall, Upperfields has a sound that’s all their own. Continue reading →
