Open Sound returns to Lansdowne with The Afterglows, Strawberry Runners, Big Nothing and more

Strawberry Runners perform at Open Sound Lansdowne

Open Sound Lansdowne is back, and bigger than ever. The summer concert series began last year in the up-and-coming suburb just west of the city. This year, the series has expanded to six weeks — every other Thursday from late June to early September — and each show will feature a lineup of three local bands, many of which are familiar faces in the Philly scene.

The triple bill of The Afterglows, Ther, and F Woods will kick off the series next Thursday, June 27. A few acts, like The Diaphone and Strawberry Runners, played Open Sound last year, but the rest are venturing out to Lansdowne for the first time. Noise rock band Tact, singer-songwriter Anika Pyle, and indie rockers Big Nothing are just a few of the performers you won’t want to miss. Continue reading →

Last month, experimental pop Philly trio Lizdelise released their third album, Holy Matrimony, and this past Saturday they celebrated the new record (as well as the end of a two-week tour) with a packed homecoming show at Underground Arts for the second House Key Showcase.

The band’s set was a mix of pop hooks and fierce playing from guitarist and singer Elizabeth De Lise (that’s Lizard King to you), drummer Taylor Cullen, and bassist / keyboardist Mark Watter. Not to mention effusively thankful and contagiously happy banter from De Lise. Continue reading →

Just six miles west of Center City lies the small borough of Lansdowne, PA, and with its proximity to city things minus the steep city rent prices, the town is turning into a small hub for art and music. That trend will continue this summer with the Open Sound Concert Series — a free bi-weekly outdoor concert series at the Lansdowne Landing park and community space featuring some of the area’s best artists. Somewhere in the middle of Strawberry Runners‘ recent tour, which included an appearance at Radiator Hospital‘s record release gig a few weeks back, bandleader Emi Night found time to relocate to Philadelphia. This makes Strawberry Runners one of, if not the, newest Philly bands, and the move couldn’t have come at a better time — the band released five-track EP In the Garden, In the Night just a few weeks ago, and now they have a video out for “Garden Hose.” Continue reading →
