Following the sudden passing of The Cranberries‘ frontwoman Dolores O’Riordan earlier this year, many musicians have been moved to incorporate covers of the iconic band’s hit songs into their live sets. But Japanese Breakfast had already been doing just that, for quite some time. If you’ve seen Michelle Zauner and band play, you may have caught their cover of “Dreams,” the breakout single from The Cranberries’ 1993 LP Everybody Else Is Doing It So Why Can’t We. Now, Japanese Breakfast’s rendition of “Dreams” has been properly recorded — the band just released the cover as part of the Spotify Singles series. When Dolores O’Riordan passed away in January, it put the breaks on two projects the Irish singer and songwriter was working on with her band, The Cranberries.
Not only was a deluxe reissue of the band’s 1993 debut Everybody Else Is Doing It So Why Can’t We in the works to celebrate its 25th anniversary, which was March 1st of this month, but a new album was in the works. Today, the surviving bandmates — bassist Mike Hogan, guitarist Noel Hogan, and drummer Fergal Lawler — shared via The Cranberries’ website that after much reflection, both projects were moving ahead. Irish singer and songwriter Dolores O’Riordan — the singular voice at the front of alternative-era favorites The Cranberries — has passed away in London at age 46.
According to a BBC report, O’Riordan was in London for a recording session; a statement from the band’s publicist said “Family members are devastated to hear the breaking news and have requested privacy at this very difficult time.” Continue reading →
Irish alt-rockers The Cranberries are back. The band just dropped a new album titled Something Else, where they revisit classics through stripped acoustic renditions along with sweeping orchestral additions.
The Cranberries also just announced an upcoming tour, in which they’ll perform these new arrangements alongside a string quartet. And if there’s one thing I know for sure in this life, it’s that adding string quartets is never a bad thing. Only added awesomeness awaits. Continue reading →

This page of the calendar is always a blur for me, Thinking back over the 300-some previous days of listening to records from Philly musicians, getting to their gigs, recording them in the WXPN studio, and spinning their music on the air is a lot to take stock of. Putting together my annual rundown of jaw-dropping artists that were new to me in 2018 quickly went from “hmm, I know I was stoked about these three” to “OMG I already have 20, I need to narrow this down.”
But that’s the blessing of living in Philly, as I say every year. We have amazing musicians operating on all tiers — the broadly-reaching Meek Mills releasing the best and most poignant records of their career, the War on Drugs-es returning home this week for a sold-out run of underplay shows, the Hop Alongs garnering widespread acclaim for their own masterpieces — but we also have musicians who are still sweating it out on basement show bills, touring in battered vans, hustling across the bar scene, and grinding to make it all work for them.
Finding the most exciting musicians in that latter space, and watching them make their way to the former, is easily my favorite part of my job. Here are a handful of artists I hope to see make that journey this year.
Arcade Fire seem to be on tour constantly as of late. The Canadian rockers can currently be found across the pond in Europe, where they just played their second night out of three in London. Early on in night one, Arcade Fire brought out Chrissie Hynde of The Pretenders to cover “Don’t Get Me Wrong.” For their final song, the band’s set-closing staple “Wake Up,” Hynde rejoined the band on stage along with openers Preservation Hall Jazz Band and The National’s Bryce Dessner. Augusta Koch may be best known as the songwriter and vocalist of Philly faves Cayetana, but lately she’s been venturing quietly into solo territory. While Koch has performed some original solo material at the occasional low-key gig around town, she’s also shared several covers on Soundcloud, including songs by artists like Strand of Oaks and the Cranberries.
Last week, Koch added Lorde to the list, tweetingout a cover of “Liability.” Her timing couldn’t be more perfect — the cover comes just in time for Lorde’s show at the Wells Fargo Center tonight. “Liability” is one of the standout tracks from Lorde’s 2017 album Melodrama, but Koch’s cover is enough to have me questioning which version I like better — both musicians have incredibly powerful voices that match the emotionally wrought nature of the song with an intensity that demands many, many repeat listens.
