Indie-pop fans filled the Union Transfer to capacity on Thursday night.
Not to be outdone, The New Pornographers filled the stage to capacity too, with their signature small army of musicians. Dispensing with stage banter, for the most part, vocalists Neko Case and AC Newman led their chorus of five additional vocalists — almost everyone on stage save bassist John Collins had a mic — through a career-spanning set of songs cherry-picked from all seven of their records. Tonight, the Indie Rock Hit Parade comes to you packed to the ceiling with special stuff for you to enjoy. Listen at 11pm ET tonight on XPN for a full two-hour show that features, right off the bat, a brand new IRHP Live Session with Jay Som! The vehicle for California musician Melina Duterte, the full-band version of Jay Som visited our studio last Friday before their show at Boot & Saddle with The Courtneys. Hear the band play songs from their much-lauded new album, Everybody Works, in the first hour of today’s show.
Also, since this week is such a massive one for new albums, we’ll spotlight a few notable releases in the second hour of tonight’s show. For the past few months, Canadian indie vets The New Pornographers have been teasing their latest album Whiteout Conditions with a string of new tracks. You know it’s going to be a wild night at Union Transfer when the crowd is filled with dads. Really, though, an assembly of middle-aged men whistled and cheered before The New Pornographers took stage, presumably in anticipation of seeing Neko Case’s hair in real life. The crowd was mild, at best, during The Pains of Being Pure at Heart, despite some members’ Philadelphia-area roots. But an immediate rush to the stage took place as the opener left, and as the crowd finished their last beer at the bar. Continue reading →
