This weekend: The Launch Music Conference and Festival in Lancaster

This year’s Launch Music Conference and Festival kicked off last night in Lancaster. Now in it’s third year, Launch combines music industry panels and events with hundreds of music showcases at venues located throughout Lancaster tonight and tomorrow night. The performances draw on both national and local acts. Some of our picks for the weekend include:

This evening: The showcase at Freedom Hall at the Lancaster Convention Center with Kingsfoil (8:30PM), Adam Taylor (9PM) and River City Extension at 10PM. Alt-country rockers Slimfit perform at 11PM at the Chamelon Club. (Reminder that Kingsfoil are also playing this summer’s WXPN XPoNential Music Festival on July 22, 23 and 24!)

Saturday highlights include: Johnny Action Figure at the Lizard Lounge at 9PM; Dana Alexandra at Annie Bailey’s (10:45PM), and The Mint at the Chameleon Club at 12:30AM.

The Key’s 12 Days Of Christmas: Adam Taylor’s “Mrs. Mistletoe”

Call us a bunch of sentimental saps*, but we honestly love us some Christmas music. Maybe it’s just nostalgia (or a romanticized notion of holiday cheer), but there’s something about the idea of lounging around the living room on a snowy December night—with a fire crackling in the fireplace and multi-colored lights glowing from a pine-scented artificial tree—while listening to classics such as Frank Sinatra’s “Let It Snow!” or Mitch Miller & The Gang’s “Must Be Santa” that makes us feel all warm and fuzzy. Then again, that feeling gets dashed pretty quickly after hearing Brooks & Dunn’s honky-tonk take on “Winter Wonderland” for the millionth time while perusing the isles of your neighborhood CVS. Thankfully, a handful of local musicians—selected by WXPN’s own Helen Leicht—were gracious enough to send us their own original holiday-related songs, which we’ll be presenting for the next dozen weekdays leading up to Christmas. Consider it the local music scene’s handmade gift to Philadelphia: give the songs a listen, download them for free, add them to your own holiday mix. Today’s track is Adam Taylor’s “Mrs. Mistletoe”—a toe-tapping acoustic-guitar number accentuated by a plinking piano melody and sleigh bells. It’s the perfect soundtrack for decorating your home prior to your big Christmas party; after all, there’s no harm to a little strategically placed mistletoe.
