Like a punkier Philly version of TV On the Radio, indie-rock quartet DRGN King headlines Johnny Brenda’s tonight. Though the group hasn’t released anything new since 2013’s Paragraph Nights, they’ve been more than active playing at festivals, recording a Daytrotter session, recording videos (i.e. this cover of The Dead Milkmen’s “Punk Rock Girl”) and more. Oh, and they’ve been playing a ton of shows. Come hang out with them tonight at 9:00 along with local rockers Mumblr and New York-based band Porches. Tickets for the 21+ show are $10 and can be purchased here.

Last Friday night at The Fire for Valentine’s Day, singer-songwriter Adrien Reju performed a set of covers of “unconventional love songs” by Leonard Cohen, Lou Reed/The Velvet Underground, Tom Waits, Jeff Buckley, Sonny Bono and others. Reju went into her studio along with bassist Owen Biddle and Andrew Chalfin on guitar to record a version of Waits’ “I Hope That I Don’t Fall In Love With You,” that you can download below for free. On the song. Reju strips the song down to it’s essential emotional core, leaving the song and her voice to speak to the power of the music. Look for her live next at Kennett Flash on February 28th and at Milkboy on March 21st.

This Weekend: Women’s Way Benefit Concert at World Cafe Live on 7/21

Women's Way Benefit Show

World Cafe Live is hosting a benefit concert for Women’s Way, an organization working to be “a powerful voice for women.” They help and empower women of all ages through advocacy, grant-making, and public education programs. Headlining the July 21st lineup is local Christine Havrilla and her Gypsy Fuzz project. Havrilla is a classic singer-songwriter originally from Philadelphia that plays with both an older folksy vibe and a modern rock twist. Check out her performance of “Falling Above” at World Cafe Live last year.

Adrien Reju, formerly of the Philly bluegrass-y outfit The Lowlands, will have a solo performance at the Women’s Way show as well. Currently based in New York, Reju released her less-folk-than-usual, more indie-pop album, Lucky Ones, in 2012. Take a listen to the breezy track “All to Myself” below.

Also playing the benefit show is Philly’s folksy singer-songwriter Teri Rambo. Rambo’s work has been features in Philly theater projects, and she is set to release her first original album this year. Below, listen to her soulful song “You Should Know This,” performed at Steel City Coffeehouse.

Get more information on the show, lineup, and organization here!
