XPN’s 12 Days Of Local Christmas: Angel Band’s “I Want A Present”

Angel Band’s all-out stage presence, bluesy Americana, superb back-up band, and vocals (led by lyricist Nancy Josephson and featuring fellow Angels Kathleen Weber and Aly Paige) continually move audiences. Initially performing as opening act and backup singers for Josephson’s husband—world-class roots musician David Bromberg—at Bonnaroo, Merlefest, the Philadelphia Folk Festival and other high profile events, Angel Band has moved up to playing prestigious concert venues on their own. Voted one of the Top 10 Favorite Bands at Bonnaroo, Angel Band are clearly a group on the ascent. Their song “I Want A Present” is available below for download; more information can be found on the band’s website, including details about their show January 21st at the Steel City Coffeehouse in Phoenixville. From NPR Music:

A veteran of 1970s bluegrass bands such as Buffalo Gals, Nancy Josephson later let music fall by the wayside in favor of a successful career as a visual artist. But in 2006, her husband David Bromberg convinced her to jam with him and some friends — and Josephson was, once again, hooked by the music. She began the folk group Angel Band, which released its first album With Roots & Wings in 2007. Along with Kathleen Weber and Aly Paige, Josephson has wooed fans with her careful attention to three-part harmonies, citing gospel and traditional spiritual music as influences.

Josephson and multi-instrumentalist Marc Moss wrote and composed most of the songs on Angel Band’s latest release, Shoot the Moon, and brought the group to World Cafe Live in Philadelphia for an afternoon performance.

You can listen to the entire performance here.
