If the first things you noticed about Ariel Pink were his royal blue-spiked heels, you were about to get doused in glitter. The rest of Union Transfer probably saw his messy bun, bouncing as he walked, as they watched from a distance. “We are Ariel Pink, and this is White Freckles,” he said as a frantic guitar began. Immediately there was glitter. A mosh pit of fans psyched off his new release, pom pom, began jumping and tossing entire jugs of glitter over the crowd.

South Jersey’s Ju-Taun open the show at Milkboy tonight. The roots rock trio of brothers are working on a record to follow up a pair of singles released over the last couple of years. “By the River” has a dark Southern rock vibe with bluesy guitar riffs and a sing-along chorus that would make fans of Delta Ray and Son Little feel at home. Watch the video for the single below and pick up tickets for tonight’s 21+ show with Ewert and The Two Dragons here.

Cayetana | photo via Facebook

There’s nothing worse than the discerning sense that winter is a timeless black hole and that you will never feel the sun’s warmth again in your life. One way to do that is to listen to some songs that remind you of sunny days and overall happiness. These ten songs are here to remind you that some day (not soon enough) it will be summer again.

Tonight’s Concert Picks: Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti at Union Transfer, The Dude Hates Cancer! benefit at Johnny Brenda’s, Lotus at FDR Park, River City Extension at The Blockley, Void Vision at Pageant: Soloveev Gallery

Experimental weird-pop visionary Ariel Pink released his sophomore record Mature Themes in August, following up his 2010 4AD breakout Before Today.  Pink has become infamous for his paradoxical anti-pop approach to music, creating mind-bending sounds that have been described as masterful by his peers.  Pink and his Haunted Graffiti band play Union Transfer tonight, along with the Greek mythology-inspired Phèdre.  The event is all ages and doors open at 8:00. Tickets are $18, available here.  Watch Pink’s video for the single “Only in My Dreams” below.

Watch a video for “Only In My Dreams” from Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti (playing Union Transfer 9/15)

Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti has just released the first music video from their latest album, Mature Themes. Directed by Travis Peterson, the VHS-vibe music vid is awash in a heavy suffusion of late-80s SoCal kitsch (it’s a surprise that a young Christian Slater never boards through the frame), paired with the lo-fi Byrdsy sound that makes up the song itself. Pink’s homonymous bangs get heavy screentime, and the song and video together excel as a brief testament to the fleeting eclipses of young love. Below, watch Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti’s video for “Only In My Dreams.” Don’t miss Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti playing Union Transfer on Saturday, September 15th. Tickets are available here starting at $16.
