Baptist Generals are an indie rock band from Denton, Texas that formed in 1998. It’s been a decade since the release of the band’s critically acclaimed debut album, a record as unassumingly fresh and brilliant as Big Star’s Third and Let It Be by The Replacements. On May 21st the Baptist Generals releases their new album, Jackleg Devotional To The Heart, on Sub Pop Records. Every local music scene has a legendary band or musician, and Chris Flemmons, singer-songwriter and leader of the Generals, is one of Denton, Texas’ most revered local icons. In 2005 he founded 35 Denton, a showcase of Denton-only bands at SXSW that became so popular they decided to bring it to Denton where it has become a significant music conference. We may not know why it took so long to get a new album from the Generals, but the good news is that it’s almost here and the first new song from it sounds great.
