If you think back to when you were first really getting into music; back to when you had a chance to go to a concert you needed to be at so you could just see your pop idol with your own human eyes – that is the emotional temperature of a Betty Who concert.

One look at 23-year-old Aussie Jess Newham, aka Betty Who, and you see a front-woman who is dancing just as much as the fans beyond the stage barrier. Most of those fans were into their twenties at the TLA last Saturday, transplanted back to their carefree teens, begging for Newham to take their hand-written letters and mix CDs. Without that barrier for the “Who Crew” to press up on and extend their hands over, the glorious dance party on the floor would have probably looked a little less glorious — you had to see the persistence of some of them, zealously waving letters for four or five songs at a time. The title “Heartbreak Dream” may be an oxymoron but it’s the latest taste of plush pop perfection from Austrailian songstress Betty Who. Essentially, it has all the elements of a great pop song and more. It’s simple, catchy, has lots of “oh-oh-ohhhhs”, and the music is big and grand. Betty Who’s voice soars over the luscious production as all the pieces fall into place. The gods of pop music have spoken: she is a rising superstar. If you fell in love with Katy Perry’s 2011 hit “Teenage Dream”, you’ll fall even harder for Betty Who’s new single. See her live on March 22nd at Underground Artsl; tickets are available here.

My Morning Download: “Somebody Loves You” by Betty Who

BettyWho Who is Betty Who you ask? Who is an electro-techno-pop singer-songwriter from Sydney, Australia, who has just released one of the best EP’s of the year, in its genre, so far. You can download the entire EP for free below. Not only does Who have a remarkable voice, the songs on her independently released EP are anthemic, infectious mini epics that scream “play me loudly.”
