Whether it’s with a band, as a guest musician or simply flying solo, Samantha Crain makes great music anyway possible. The folk singer has been around for a few years and just released her third studio album, Kid Face in February.  Her music varies from haunting to sweet folk ballads and all of it is pretty good.  Tonight, she’s playing at The Fire.  Check out some of her music below and click here for ticket information.

Get psyched for PhilaMOCA’s David Lynch-themed exhibit by listening to David Lynch’s new LP The Big Dream on Pitchfork

David Lynch is an incredible filmaker/TV producer/coffee brand, releasing some of the weirdest and most engrossing films of all time – from Eraserhead to Twin Peaks and Mullholland Drive.

In addition to his surreal cinematic output, Lynch has dabbled in music, adding instrumentation or lyrics to other artists’ work as well as recording his own solo projects as well as collaborations.  Next week, he’ll release his latest album, The Big Dream, but before it’s available, you can listen to it streaming on Pitchfork.  It’s a great and quirky set of blues-rock, which is just what you’d expect from Lynch.

If you like Lynch as much as me, then just listening to the album isn’t enough for you.  Well, it just so happens that PhilaMOCA is throwing its second Lynch-themed art exhibition “Eraserhead Forever (and ever)” this Friday at 6:30.  Click here for more information and check out one of the bonus tracks from The Big Dream below.

Jam out with Jon Spencer Blues Explosion at The Chameleon Club on 7/19

jon spencer blues explosion

The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion have been around for more than twenty years now, creating a digable blend of rockabilly, blues punk and every branch of rock in between.  The group released their latest LP (their first in eight years) Meat + Bone last September and have been on a world tour ever since.

One stop on the recently-announced summer leg of said tour is The Chameleon Club in Lancaster on July 19th.  With such intense, electric and amplified music, this group is sure to put on a legendary show.  Below, you can watch the very bizarre video for their recent single, “Bag of Bones” and get tickets here.

Helen Leicht’s Local Pick Of The Day: Deb Callahan’s “Gonna Get There”

Deb Callahan is in the blues business, and she don’t mess around. Her new album Tell It Like It Is picks up on where she left off with her 2008 release Grace & Grit. Deb collaborated once again with producer and songwriter Chris Arms and on the record she brings some tasteful touches of gospel and rock to the mix. Deb’s got several record release shows coming up throughout the area which you can check out the listings for here. This song, “Gonna Get There” has a nice little crunchy Stevie Ray Vaughan vibe to it. Local guitar legend Allen James knocks out some fairly classic blues-rock riffs and this girl sure can sing!
