Boy & Bear brought Limit of Love to a devoted Underground Arts crowd

When Australia’s Boy & Bear hit the stage at Underground Arts on Friday night, the fanfare was enormous. The raucous hurrahs were so loud at one point, David Hosking actually had to hush the crowd so he could get a few words in edgewise. So, imagine my surprise when I forfeit my spot at the front of the stage to wander back and get some wide shots of the show. It was little more than half full, which was a bit of a shock, and a bit more of a disappointment. Mostly because Boy & Bear are really, really, really, good. Like… really.

Philly blues band John the Conqueror released its newest single through Rolling Stone this week. Just before Christmas, Philadelphia singer-songwriter Gretchen Lohse performed her own rendition of “Walking in the Air” from the 1982 film, “The Snowman” at Johnny Brenda’s. For those who weren’t there to see the performance themselves, Lohse has released it for download on her Bandcamp.

Australia’s Boy & Bear released their sophomore effort Harlequin Dream at the end of 2013, following up their 2011 debut with even more beautiful folk rock. Last week an album sampler was released via NoiseTrade, including a free download of both “Southern Sun” and “Three Headed Woman” along with live recordings of each song.  Fans of Other Lives, Husky and Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros will find that Harlequin Dream fits in nicely with their music collection. The final Gotta Hear Song of the Week for 2013 comes is “Southern Sun” by Boy & Bear. The Sydney, Australia folk rock band started out a solo project in 2009 for singer and songwriter Dave Hosking and has grown into a five piece band including Killian Gavin (vocals/guitars), Tim Hart (drums, vocals, guitars), Jon Hart (vocals/keys/mandolin) and Dave Symes on bass. Boy & Bear recently released their sophomore release, Harlequin Dream, on Nettwerk Records. They perform at Milkboy Philly on Saturday, March 22nd, with Dresses.
