Tonight’s Concert Picks: XPN Welcomes Boy at World Cafe Live, Chuck Ragan’s Revival Tour at the TLA, SpaceGhostPurrp at Underground Arts

XPN welcomes Boy to World Cafe Live tonight. Celebrating their first US tour, the Swiss-German duo will be bringing their unbelievably happy medley of indie music to the quaint stages of World Cafe. The duo envelopes themselves within upbeat rhythms and sounds in the same vain as iconic indie groups such as Phoenix and Feist, with a little bit of Vampire Weekend thrown into the mix. Coupling with their debut tour in the US, the band will also be treating fans with tracks off their debut album Mutual Friends, which was released in 2011. Chuck Ragan will be playing at the Theatre of Living Arts tonight. Accompanying him will be a wide assortment of musicians from Rocky Votolato and Tim McIlrath, frontman for Rise Against in honor of the 2013 Revival Tour. This is the sixth year for the tour itself and spans from March 15th to April 23rd through most of the US. Ragan, along with the other members of the Revival Tour, will be forming together on one stage to play to audiences, but Ragan himself will be playing songs from his solo projects as well. Miami rapper SpaceGhostPurrp will be playing at the Undergound Arts tonight. Releasing his debut album in June of last year entitled Mysterious Phonk: Chronicles of SpaceGhostPurrp, the rapper/producer has also been busy recording songs for rap artists such as ASAP Rocky and Wiz Khalifa. The rapper will be playing with the rap group he is both the founder and member of, Raider Klan, who have released a mixtape in September of last year which SpaceGhostPurpp has also contributed to. Local rapper Chill Moody teamed up with Freeway for the grooving new track “Change Coming.” The song is included on Moody’s latest RFM album, which he previewed at his sold-out headlining gig at The TLA this past week. International duo BOY is one of 2013′s buzziest bands, and XPN will be welcoming them to World Cafe Live on Wednesday, March 27th. This week’s Key Studio Session featured punk rockers Glocca Morra, a wild bunch that put forth two releases in 2012 on top of touring extensively. 2013 sees the Philly quartet opening for hometown favorites Everyone Everywhere at The Barbary on January 19th; tickets and information can be found here. Indie-pop musician Matt Pond released a free acoustic EP called The Natural Lines this week via Noisetrade. The one-time Philadelphia resident will be releasing The Lives Inside The Lines In Your Hand in just over a month and has a date set opening for Jukebox the Ghost at Union Transfer on March 15th. One of the latest exports from the Motor City are Jamaican Queens, a glam-pop/rock trio with hints of a harder-edged Foster the People. Jamaican Queens have a debut album coming out in March and have kicked-off a tour that brings them through Philadelphia on January 15th for a show at Kung Fu Necktie. A new band for 2013 that we’re excited about is BOY, two women – Valeska Steiner & Sonja Glass – from Hamburg and Zurich. BOY’s debut album, Mutual Friends, is being released in the States on Nettwerk Records on February 26th. Their single, “Little Numbers” has gotten a little over 7 million views on Youtube and the album is filled with charming, melodically rich indie-pop songs. One of our favorite new musical discoveries, BOY, are playing Philadelphia on March 27th at World Cafe Live. BOY are two women, Valeska Steiner & Sonja Glass. Steiner sang in several bands in her native Switzerland before moving to Germany, where she met Glass. Their debut album, Mutual Friends, is being released in the States on February 26th on Nettwerk Records. Mutual Friends is a collection of delicious and infectious indie-pop songs, as the video to the band’s first single “Little Numbers” in the States attests to below.
