Tonight’s Concert Pick: Buffy Sainte-Marie at World Cafe Live (UPDATE: Postponed)

One of the biggest surprises at this year’s NonCOMM convention was a spellbinding Wednesday night set by Canadian folk icon Buffy Sainte-Marie. Though she built her name in the 60s and 70s on lyrically charged, musically subtle songs like “Universal Soldier,” Sainte-Marie’s new Power in the Blood is a rager, rocking hard and loud with some alluring mystical moments that would not have sound out of place coming from Kate Bush. She returns to the World Cafe Live stage tonight, and if you missed her last week, don’t miss her tonight. Recap: Folk icon Buffy Sainte-Marie surprises NonCOMM with a rager of a performance

Buffy Sainte-Marie began her career in the the 1960s and 70s North American folk scene, but the performance she brought to the NonCOMM stage was intensely louder than that might lead you to believe. The singer-guitarist has a new album out called Power In The Blood, and the songs she showcased from it were pure ragers: loud guitar, barreling drums, a cathartic vocal delivery by Sainte-Marie. It was surprising, and by the time the title track led into “Not The Lovin’ Kind,” excitement in the room had reached a fever pitch. Continue reading →

Tonight’s Picks: Sonni Shine And The Underwater Sounds at North Star Bar + Buffy Sainte-Marie, Lykke Li

Sonni Shine And The Underwater Sounds perform with Abstract Verses and Ill Dootsat at 8 p.m. at North Star Bar; tickets to the 21+ show are $8. Tonight’s show is a benefit for The Shakedown Project, which “was founded to create innovative, thought provoking experimental theater which blurs the disciplinary lines of entertainment, combining different art forms into unique coherent narratives.”
