Tonight’s Concert Pick: Bushwalla at Kung Fu Necktie

BushwallaYou know we’re in the middle of early-January’s annual live-music doldrums when the only show we can recommend is Bushwalla. For some (including the “cult following” mentioned in Bushwalla’s bio on Kung Fu Necktie’s website), “[t]he LA-based singer-songwriter is known…for bringing his distinctive ‘hip-hop/soul/acoustic/folk/comedy/optimism/vaudeville show.'” For others, well, he’s mostly known as one of those zany, funky-white-dude musicians who toe the line between acoustic folk and hip-hop—a combination that is occasionally described as “eclectic” or “unique,” but is more accurately defined as “unfortunate.” Still, there’s no denying Bushwalla has a loyal fanbase, most of which won’t need a reminder that he’s coming through town tonight (as they probably purchased tickets in advance the day the show was announced), and none of which probably care about any disparaging “funky-white-dude” comments that are thrown his way. Bushwalla performs with Flamingo and TBA at 8 p.m. at Kung Fu Necktie; tickets to the 21+ show are $8.
