On Friday night, the TLA welcomed electronic pop artist, Charli XCX. The 22 year old English singer-songwriter released her debut album, True Romance in April 2013 but her biggest claim to success was from “I Love It,” the song she wrote and was performed by Icona Pop. “I Love It” became a #1 hit single in the UK and topped the charts in North America. Friday night, she performed backed by a band and group of dancers, some in Go-Go attire, others dressed like Catholic school girls. Continue reading →

Tonight’s Concert Picks: Charli XCX, The Happy Together Tour, and Tallest Man on Earth

British experimental pop star Charli XCX sinks into the sky wrapping herself up in fuzzy overtures and synthetic instrumentals. She sprung to stardom around 2010 after writing and playing songs for years. Her dad used to be a show promoter, booking the likes of Bob Marley and Siouxsie and the Banshees, which fed her desire to go out and perform. But over this past year she has perfected her craft by making electronic pop tunes while simultaneously speaking in a danceable language that everyone can understand. Just a reminder that our giveaway is still going on to win a pair of tickets to tonight’s show. All you have to do is make sure you follow @TheKeyXPN on twitter and tweet at us before noon to win. Simple, no? If you don’t win, you can still check her out tonight at North Star Bar for $12-14, the event is all ages. Doors open at 7 p.m.

Before you get too excited for ten days of free music at Musikfest in Bethlehem next weekend, check out a pre-event hosted by Musikfest Cafe; The Happy Together Tour 2012 at ArtsQuest Center at Steel Stacks. The tour has been traveling around the country playing old school classic jams from the 60’s and 70’s. Some of the greatest songs of all time came from these bands including songs such as “Happy Together”, “I’m a Believer”, “Young Girl”, and “Kind of a Drag”. Featured bands in the tour are: The Turtles ft. Flo & Eddie, The Grass Roots, Micky Dolenz (of The Monkees), The Buckinghams, and Gary Pucket & The Union Gap. Doors open at 6 p.m., show starts at 7. You can grab theater or balcony tickets here.

Twitter Contest: Win tickets to see Charli XCX at the North Star on Monday!

UPDATE: Okay, so maybe announcing this giveaway right before a massive Twitter outage was bad timing. So we’re extending the deadline. Tweet at us by Monday at noon and you’ll be in the running to win a pair of tickets. Good luck!
Next week, UK synthpop sensation Charlotte Aitchison – you know her better as Charli XCX – comes to Philadelphia for a show at the North Star Bar. Her music is tense and brooding, resurrecting the tones and timbres of Cocteau Twins and Kate Bush in kind of the same way that her acclaimed American counterpart, Zola Jesus, has been doing, but it’s also danceable. So, in other words, if you were the type of Philadelphian who frequented Zipperhead back in the day and still know where the best goth DJ nights in town are, this is probably your kind of show. Lucky for you, we’re giving away a pair of tickets through The Key’s Twitter!

The rules are simple. First, follow @TheKeyXPN if you’re not already. Second, tweet at us with the hashtag #IWantToSeeCharliXCX. We’ll choose a winner at random tomorrow afternoon and DM you to confirm. Get some motivational vibes from Charli’s Heartbreaks and Earthquakes mixtape below. Good luck!
