Stream the new Chelsea Light Moving LP via NPR (playing Union Transfer on 4/3)

Nothing like a bit of heavy, layered grunge listening to start off the week.  Ahead of its release on March 5th via Matador Records, NPR is streaming Chelsea Light Moving‘s self-titled debut as a First Listen.  The newest Thurston Moore project has been in existence for just about a year under this moniker, though the band members have been playing together as Moore’s touring band for a while; filling out the space behind the Sonic Youth founder’s vocals and guitar playing are Samara Lubelski on violin, Keith Wood on guitar and John Molony on drums.  As expected from the four tracks that have been floating around for several months, Chelsea Light Moving is a confluence of the varied musical streams Moore has paddled down over his long career.  Some tracks are melodic, thoughtful and poetic, while others harken back to his avant-garde punk roots and still others cross over into blown-up distorted freak-outs (and some, like “Alighted,” zig-zag back and forth between all of these).

Chelsea Light Moving will be in town at Union Transfer on April 3rd with Talk Normal.  Tickets and information for the all-ages show can be found here.  Watch a video for “Burroughs” below and stream the full Chelsea Light Moving LP here.

Thurston Moore returns with Chelsea Light Moving (playing Union Transfer on 4/3)

Chelsea Light Moving will be making their Philadelphia debut at Union Transfer on Wednesday, April 3.  Led by guitar master and Sonic Youth founding-member Thurston Moore, the New York-based band evolved out of Moore’s 2011 solo project and features violinist Samara Lubelski, drummer John Moloney and guitarist Keith Wood.  The quartet announced this week that their first record will be released through Matador on March 5. Tickets for the all-ages show go on sale today at 12:00 p.m. EST; more information can be found here.  Below, watch Chelsea Light Moving perform “Groovy & Linda” (you’ll also get a sense of Moore’s affinity for educational banter) and download four free tracks here.  If you missed it, check out a photo recap of Moore’s sold-out show at Space 1026 from last month here.

Thurston Moore & John Moloney coming to Space 1026 on 12/12

Sonic Youth’s Thurston Moore teamed up with frequent on-stage collaborator John Moloney (Howlin’ Rain) for the experimental Caught on Tape release earlier this year, and the duo is now taking the project on the road.  Moore’s work has spanned the punk rock, avant-garde singer-songwriter and drone-y noise genres over the years and this latest work falls heavily into the latter to the delight of psychedelic distortion fans.  You may recognize Moloney as the sometimes-drummer in Moore’s solo project touring band and more recently as a member of Chelsea Light Moving, a quartet featuring fellow touring band members Keith Wood (Hush Arbors) and Samara Lubelski.  Thurston Moore & John Moloney perform with Speedy Ortiz at Space 1026 on Wednesday, December 12th.  Tickets and information can be found here.  Listen to an excerpt of Caught on Tape below, and download the more rock-angled Chelsea Light Moving tracks for free here.
