Philly Drum Project welcomes Chuck Treece to Beats, Brews & Banter at the Back Room at Roosevelt’s Pub on 2/4

Local musician and pro-skateboarder Chuck Treece will be the host of February’s Beats, Brews & Banter event presented by The Philly Drum Project. Treece was a founding member of 80s skate punk band McRad and has toured with Bad Brains and Urge Overkill, in addition to being a preeminent Philly session musician. Started in April of 2012, Beats, Brews & Banter is a monthly gathering that brings together the best in Philadelphia drumming for an evening of discussion and demonstration; read Dan Brightcliffe’s interview with the group here. February’s event will take place in the Back Room at the Roosevelt Pub and is free to attend. For more information, go here. Beastie Boys tribute night coming to The Fire on August 7th

It’s been a rough few months since Beastie Boys founding member Adam Yauch passed away at the all-too-tender age of 47. Though his absence leaves a yawning void in our hearts, his legacy as MCA leaves decades of amazing, groundbreaking music well worth celebrating. And that’s precisely the point of the event the folks at The Fire have put together. Brooklyn rap-rocker Don McCloskey will host an evening of music from DJs, MCs, and a house tribute band including local artistsChuck Treece, Tom Spiker, Damon Bennet, and Travis Woodson. Admission to the 21+ event is $10; show starts at 9. More info is available on the Facebook event page.

Hear McRad on the Y-Rock Local Tracks Sessions this Sunday

Chuck Treece‘s versatility is the stuff of legend. He spent the ’80s as a pro-skateboard kid who fronted an underground punk band, then made a switch to become one of the most skilled, sought-after session musicians in the city of Philadelphia.

Though he’s pulled bass duties with Pearl Jam and Billy Joel (That bumpin’ low end in “River Of Dreams”? Yup, that’s him.), Treece’s first love remains McRad, the punky power trio he founded as a North Philly teenager in the 1980s. This weekend, Treece is bringing McRad to WXPN studios to record a Y-Rock Local Tracks Session. You can tune in on Sunday, August 29, during the 8:00 hour of Jake Rabid’s Philly Local show.
