Tonight, XPN Welcomes Icelandic singer-songwriter Asgeir with Conner Youngblood opening to Milkboy. Here’s your chance to see two very different songwriters connected through the warmth, soul and sprit of the music that both musicians exude. Below, watch a version of “King and Cross” that Asgeir performed at WXPN’s Non-COMM in May, and donwload “Confidence” by Conner Youngblood, from a recent EP. Go to the XPN Concert Calendar for tickets and more information about the show.

Masked Swedish psychedelic tribal-jazz-funk-rockers Goat, who recently signed to Sub Pop records in the States, play Union Transfer. The band released its debut album, World Music, in 2012 which Pitchfork got right. Grayson Currin wrote:

Over insistent rhythms that suggest Spacemen 3 and, at least in spirit, the conjuring drones of Pandit Pran Nath and La Monte Young, Goat weave an ecumenical history of rock’n’roll. They intercept signals from Led Zeppelin and Funkadelic, Jefferson Starship and Fela Kuti, the Congos and the Rolling Stones.

Go here for tickets and more information about the show. Below, listen to a new song, “Dreambuilding,” and “Goathead” from their World Music album.

Ontario rockers Arkells return to Philly to play the North Star Bar tonight. The band releases its new album, High Noon, on August 5th. With several singers and dozens of melodically rich pop songs to go with them, Arkells are a Canadian band “this close” to the verge of crossing over to broad Stateside appeal. In 2012 they won the Juno Award for best new band, and if their excellent new material is any indication of the direction they’re going, it won’t be long until you can tell your friends “you saw them when.” Go here for tickets and more information about the show.

Firefly Under the Radar: Conner Youngblood

conner youngblood

If you’re heading out to Dover, DE later this week for the Firefly Music Festival, don’t miss Texas multi-instrumentalist Conner Youngblood.  A recent Yale graduate in American Studies, his music is a melting pot of seemingly incongruous genres and techniques that makes for an exquisite and transcendent outcome.  Youngblood’s blending of acoustic and electronic instrumentation with a focus on narrative lyrics is not so surprising, though, after learning he lists Bob Dylan, James Blake and Ray Lamontagne as influential touchstones.

The singer-songwriter released two EPs in quick succession last year – Sketches Pt. 1 and Sketches Pt. 2 – and is currently working on new recordings. Both of last year’s EPs can be downloaded for free here.  Catch him on Friday at 3:30 p.m. at The Porch; more information for the festival can be found here.  Below, watch a live video of “Australia” and stream “The Warpath,” which was featured as a My Morning Download last August.

My Morning Download: “The Warpath” by Conner Youngblood

Singer-songwriter Conner Youngblood recently released a gorgeous new song called “The Warpath” that you can download below. Youngblood is currently working on his new collection of songs, Sketches Pt 2, as he readies his full album release. Youngblood caught the attention of music fans last year with the release Sketches Pt. 1 that can be downloaded for free here. That collection included the song “Monster,” that, like “The Warpath” blends acoustic instrumentation with electronic instrumentation. A recent graduate from Yale, he’s an emerging singer-songwriter worth following for his inventive songwriting and unique sound.
