Every week, we invite an artist to our studio to play a cover tune live on the air for a little thing we call Copy That. This week, we were joined by one of our favorite singer-songwriters: Jason Isbell. Following the release of his new album, Something More Than Free, and hot off a set at the 2015 Newport Folk Festival, Jason joined me in the studio to talk about his new (chart-topping!) record, as well as the lasting impact of Bob Dylan’s performance at Newport in 1965. Jason caps off the visit with a rousing performance of Todd Snider’s “Play A Train Song” (which has also been covered in the past by Robert Earl Keen). Check out the performance and interview below, plus hear his performance at Newport via NPR Music. Black Stars frontman Nik Greeley just released his first solo EP, Town Gypsy, and earlier this week stopped by WXPN to chat about it on the air with Dan Reed.

“It’s a little more on a personal side,” he said of the new music. “Black Stars was more about having fun, letting loose. I wanted to prove myself as a songwriter and not just a wild frontman.”

Greeley was on the air for Reed’s Copy That segment, where he played a mashup of The Rolling Stones’ “You Can’t Always Get What You Want” and Lou Reed’s “Walk On the Wild Side” with Andrew Warren on guitar and Jason O’Mara on sax. Continue reading →

Listen to Kwesi K cover John Legend on WXPN’s Copy That

He left Philly for Los Angeles back in the fall, but singer-songwriter Kwesi K is back this week for a short stay. He appeared on the air on WXPN last night, chatting with Dan Reed about his new digs and finding himself immersed in the professional songwriting community of LA. “I like being in a room where I’m the worst writer there,” he says. “It’s a nice challenge.” Continue reading →

Philly favorite Andrew Lipke was on the lineup of last night’s birthday bash for Bob Dylan over at Rembrandt’s in the Fairmount section of Philly, and earlier in the day he stopped by WXPN studios to appear on the air with Dan Reed for the weekly Copy That segment. Strumming his acoustic guitar and cacked by an airy cello accompaniment, Lipke did his version of “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door” – which he later played at the party. Give it a listen below, and see him live at Gorgas Park on Saturday, June 20th. More information on the show can be found here. Continue reading →
