New Zealand’s The Ruby Suns play Johnny Brenda’s tonight. The psych / pop band is touring in support of their dreamy Christopher LP, which they released earlier this year on Sub Pop. Using his world travels as inspiration for all three Ruby Suns full lengths, Ryan McPhun drew inspiration from a trip to Scandinavia for this most recent effort. Lyrically, Christopher is a breakup album but sonically it’s an adventure into both the musical and natural landscapes of the north. Tickets and information for theie 21+ show with Painted Palms can be found here. Watch the video for “Kingfisher Call Me” below and download the song here.
Tomorrow night at Undergound Arts there’s an excellent lineup of DJ’s and electronica musicians worth seeing for a glimpse into some of the best musicians working in the electronic dance scene; each one bringing their own unique influences to the mix. The evening features headliner Daedelus with support from Salva, Samo Sound Boy and Ryan Hemsworth.
DJ and producer Hemsworth is from Halifax, Nova Scotia, and has received a lot of music blog love and positive critical attention lately not only for his own work, but for his remixes of songs by Grimes, Frank Ocean and Drake. What’s notable about his work is his use of genres like hip-hop and R&B to inform the moodiness and emotion of the music he creates. His recent album, Last Words, released on WeDidIt, features “Colour & Movement” that you can watch below. Hemsworth is definitely worth keeping an eye (and ear) on. WIth each new release and remix, he’s adding to the conversation of electronic music in leaps and bounds. Sample some of his work below.
Go here for tickets to the show tomorrow evening at Underground Arts. The show is 21+. Doors at 8 PM; Show at 9 PM.
San Fran mixmaster Paul Salva, or just Salva, will release a new EP, Odd Furniture to accompany his upcoming tour with fellow Los Angeles DJ Daedelus. Salva, head of the beat powerhouse record label Frite Nite (sponsoring acts like Shlohmo and Ana Sia), took off this year after his remix of Kanye West’s “Mercy” exploded on dancefloors. His 2011 debut Complex Housing (released on Friends of Friends) featured nightclub stunners like “Keys Open Doors” and “Baroque.” He upped his own slick production cred by rocking live crowds at 2012′s Coachella, Mutek Montreal and Lollapalooza festivals. Tickets and information for Salva’s March 3rd performance at Underground Arts (21+) can be found on our concert calendar here; you can stream the RL Grime & Salva remix of “Mercy” below.
