Tonight’s Concert Picks: Diarrhea Planet at Underground Arts, Sistahs Attune at World Cafe Live

Diarrhea Planet | Photo by John Vettese

We’ve long moved past the band’s slightly concerning name and it’s time you do to – it is in no way indicative of the quality of their music. Diarrhea Planet have been around for a few years now, and every time the Nashville six-piece comes through Philadelphia it is a night of face-melting rock and roll. Diarrhea Planet will be at Underground Arts tonight along with Nashville tourmates Daddy Issues and Philly’s own Hound. Check the XPN Concert Calendar for more info on the 21+ show. Indie Rock Hit Parade Live Session: Diarrhea Planet

Joining us in the studio for our newest Indie Rock Hit Parade Live Session is a hard-rocking, hard-partying six-piece from Nashville. Diarrhea Planet formed in 2009 and released their third full-length album, Turn To Gold, earlier this year on the Infinity Cat label. Outside of their, ahem, attention-grabbing name, DP’s most prominent feature is the stacked lineup of no less than four lead guitarists. Jordan Smith, Brent Toler and Emmett Miller (who also share songwriting and lead vocal duties) are joined by fourth axeman Evan Bird as well as the locked-in rhythm section of bassist Mike Boyle and drummer Ian “Tuff Gus” Bush. The result is a little bit like watching your best friends try to keep pace with one another as they pile on riffs and licks with increasing dexterity.

The Indie Rock Hit Parade returns tonight with a rip-roaring two hour edition at 11pm ET on WXPN! Stick around after the November edition of Making Time RADio with Dave P for a brand new show, featuring a hot new IRHP Live Session. The Nashville-based guitar army known as Diarrhea Planet joins us in the studio to unleash live versions of songs from their new album, Turn To Gold. If you like multiple lead guitar lines and grin-inducing melodies, you won’t want to miss it! Also in the mix is a spotlight on Running Out Of Love, the long-awaited new album from Swedish electro-shoegazers The Radio Dept.! Following a short hiatus (and the release of an essential singles comp), The Radio Dept. have returned with a politically charged new record that we’ll dig into tonight. Be on the lookout for new tracks from DC punks Flasher, veteran rock n’ souler Mark “BBQ” Sultan and glittery pop crew Roses, too!

In case you couldn’t tell from their name, Diarrhea Planet, are a punk six-piece that enjoy having a good time and also don’t quite care about the rules. We covered their show at Underground Arts earlier this year, and let’s just say we were impressed. Their ’70s inspired sounds cuts through the noise and brings you something you should really see for yourself, and tonight you can, as they return to Underground Arts for a show with the playfully named Music Band and Hound. For more information on the show head to the XPN Concert Calendar. Continue reading →

Ridiculous band name, awesome band. Diarrhea Planet headlines Underground Arts tonight with their Philly-based tourmates Left & Right in tow. The blistering rock n’ roll six-piece dishes fierce fuzzy riffs and high energy not unlike their Nashville brethren JEFF the Brotherhood; 2013’s I’m Rich Beyond Your Wildest Dreams is highly recommended listening. Tickets and more information on the show can be found at the XPN Concert Calendar. Continue reading →
