Folk-influenced Philly five-piece Black Horse Motel celebrates the release of its full-length debut Red Summer Spirit tonight at Kung Fu Necktie. The album comes after two years of revamping and reinvention for the band, which began when singer / guitarist / banjo player Josh Cradic came into the fold in fall of 2011, immediately gelling with the other players. A whirlwind of writing, shows an a successful Kickstarter campaign followed. Tonight the band will be joined by Hezekiah Jones and The Bailey Hounds; tickets and more information can be found here. Up the Chain plays MilkBoy tonight. The project of singer and multi-instrumentalist Reed Kendall is a cinematic collusion of styles, from folk to jazz and Brill Building pop. The band released the album Holy, Open, Drying Road in 2011, and just a couple weeks ago released a music video for a song from the album called “Here I Haven Meet.” Check out the video below; get more information on the show here.

We’re digging the Haight-Ashbury vibes of this new music video from Foxygen, WXPN’s Artist to Watch for the month of January. “San Fransisco” is sharply art-directed with vintage clothing and set-pieces, not to mention a nice location shoot at a park that visitors to the city in question probably know well. You can now stream Of Montreal‘s “Dumb Acre” as well as a variety of other unreleased tracks from the band’s Kickstarter page for their forthcoming documentary, Song Dynasties (go here to donate – there’s still two weeks left!). In exchange for donations, the band is circulating previously unreleased singles, including some of their oldest material. You can catch Of Montreal playing with Foxygen and French Horn Rebellion at The Trocadero December 13th. Tickets and information can be found on our concert calendar here. Here’s a brand new video for “Sails, Hermaphroditic” from Of Montreal‘s rarities collection, Daughter of Cloud, which was released last week. Daughter of Cloud features 17 tracks that the band has recorded over the last sixteen years. Of Montreal will be playing at The Trocadero with Foxygen and French Horn Rebellion on December 13; tickets can be found here. Bi-coastal psych-pop duo Foxygen have been busy this year, releasing Take the Kids Off Broadway in July, participating in CMJ’s music conference last week and announcing the release of another album for January.  Fortunately, the Olympia, Washington and New York City partnership of Sam France and Jonathan Rado will be taking some time to tour with Of Montreal on a string of dates that lands them in Philadelphia on December 13th.  For information about their show at The Trocadero, go here.  Below, download “Make It Known” off of the recent album.

Working in the vein of Alabama Shakes and Michael Kiwanuka, Erin Costelo re-energizes the classic 1960s pop/soul sound on her new record We Can Get Over. The Halifax, Nova Scotia native drew inspiration from The Dells, The Impressions and Burt Bacharach for her third album; download the single “Oh Me Oh My” below from Monday’s My Morning Download.

Brooklyn’s Beast Patrol recently released a four-song EP called Fierce & Grateful on Space Camp Radio Records.  Fronted by Vanessa Bley, the EP’s tracks are catchy and expressive, evocative of early Pretenders and Police records.  Below, download the EP’s second track “Plaster”; you can stream Fierce & Grateful in its entirety here.

Buzzing Philly quartet Family Vacation are just about as new as a band can be, but they’ve already shown an impressive amount of talent in a short amount of time.  Their first single “Waiting Clouds” will please fans of Youth Lagoon, Dr. Dog and Cheers Elephant with its trembling guitar and reverb-drenched vocals; download the track below and keep an eye out for the Temple University outfit’s debut EP (expected next month).

Foxygen is the bi-Coastal songwriting partnership of Sam France from Olympia, Washington & Jonathan Rado from NYC. This past July they released Take The Kids Off Broadway on Jagjaguwar Records, and just announced a new album, We Are the 21st Century Ambassadors of Peace & Magic, coming out in January. Just off of playing the CMJ music conference in New York, Foxygen were the talk of the town. Reviewing one of their shows (at the Mercury Lounge a week ago), music blogger Bill Pearis from Brooklyn Vegan wrote that Foxygen had “a confident melange of late ’60s / early ’70s psych pop and glam that was exemplified by the closing number that seemed to merge “Under My Thumb” and “Suspicious Minds” into a new baby.” That description nicely summarizes just what the band’s debut collection sounds like; imagine the Stones, Kinks, some soulful glam and the ramshackle charm of the Modern Lovers thrown into the boxing ring, fighting nicely with each other for victory. Foxygen are currently out on tour with Of Montreal and play the The Trocadero on Thursday, December 3rd. Go here for tickets and more information about the show.
