The running quip seemed to be “Gang of Four? More like Gang of One.” After all, the 80s UK post-punk favorites are down to a single original member, guitarist and producer Andy Gill, following the 2012 departure of singer Jon King. But if you could wrap your head around that fact – the Gang of Four playing at the Public Radio Rocks SXSW showcase is different from the Gang of Four some of us saw back in the day – and simply took the set at face value, it was propulsively energetic and highly entertaining. SXSW Dispatch: Public Radio Rocks showcase with Twin Shadow, Courtney Barnett, Gang of Four and more

We’ve parked ourselves at the Radio Day Stage at the Austin Convention Center, the site of the fourth annual Public Radio Rocks SXSW showcase, curated in collaboration with WFUV in New York, KUTX in Austin, KXT in Dallas, The Current in Minneapolis and WXPN in Philly. On the bill for today are Twin Shadow, Ryan Bingham, Best Coast, Madisen Ward and the Mama Bear, Gang of Four and Courtney Barnett.

A folk-rooted duo with a punk edge, Philly’s Church Girls headlines a show tonight at Boot and Saddle. Primarily the work of singers and songwriters Mariel Beaumont and Evan Anders, the five-piece band celebrated the release of its self-titled debut EP last month at MilkBoy. Tonight they’ll be joined by Sonnder, who are in the midst of their single-a-month project that will culminate in a new LP by December.
