The legendary New York singer-songwriter and rocker Garland Jeffreys recently released a new album, Truth Serum. Since the early Seventies, Jeffreys has been recording and performing, and at the young age of 70 shows no signs of slowing down. In 2011 he released The King of In Between, his first album in 13 years, and now comes Truth Serum. Many of the songs were recorded as demos on cassette by Jeffreys over the last several years. The album features production support by James Maddock and Larry Campbell (Bob Dylan, Levon Helm), with contributions from some of New York’s top session musicians: Steve Jordan (drums), Zev Katz (bass), Duke Levine (guitar) and Brian Mitchell (keys). Below, listen to “Any Rain,” which has the classic Jeffreys’ sound: soulful rock and roll, gritty yet rhythmic guitar, a steady groove, Church-like organ fills, and a New York story teller’s sensibility. Garland performs this Wednesday, September 25th at World Cafe Live. Tickets can be purchased here.
