With roots in gospel and soul music Gedeon Luke & The People hail from Memphis. Luke also has roots in Philly. He explains:
“They say it takes a village to raise a child, and i agree. Although I was born in Memphis TN, a lot of what I know on the inside comes from Philly. I was raised in a house with 6 sisters and brothers, and all I can remember my mother saying is, “Get up, it’s time to go to church.” My church was a different one. We have over 50 congregations all over the U.S., and 1 pastor. So we traveled our whole life up and down the road with the church going to conferences and conventions. With our headquarter’s church being in Philly, we visited Philly at least 7 or 8 times a year as a child. 18 hour trips became a way of life, and we loved it. My mother and father always taught us to keep God first in all that we do and to diligently seek him. and because of the firm foundation that was built by my parents, I am proud to say that I’m still here.
Going to church, I’ve met some of the best musicians; Johnny Croom who worked with Boyz II Men, Aaliyah, Ginuwine, JT Taylor of Kool & the Gang, and a good friend of mine – Tommy Brown – one of the Best B3 organ players. Great engineers Andre Houser and Tyrone Mayo. I’ve learned a lot from these guys and the talks they gave me as I grew older always stayed with me. In 2006, after the passing of my dear father, my mother bought a house in South Philly just so we would have a place to stay when we come there. So if you see me in Philly sometimes, don’t be surprised. I probably just left Apostolic Square!”
Luke is releasing his debut album, Live Free And Love in April. Below, download “The Healing,” a smooth, soulful serenade with an uplifting message. “The Healing,” Luke says, “is the most transparent way to express my feelings in a song and the overall message of my music, vision, and sound. I wanted the lyrics to uplift, edify, and encourage the listeners from start to finish. My mission is to make it known that music is the way out if we would simply open up our hearts and our minds and realize that we can’t live without each other and so we may as well be friends. Let’s learn to love again.”
Amen to that.
