My Morning Download: “Battles” by Grace Woodroofe; playing North Star Bar in March

21 year-old Australian singer-songwriter Grace Woodroofe was discovered by Heath Ledger when she was 16 years old, and her debut album Always Want – on Modular Records – was produced by Ben Harper. Don’t let the star power of Ledger and Harper detract from the fact that Woodroofe is undeniably talented. She’s got a rich, sultry, bluesy and engaging alto voice. The songs on her debut are melancholy and dance with the darkness of the human spirit. Woodroofe brings to the table a similar musical vibe as Fiona Apple and even early Joni Mitchell in the intensity of her passionate lyrics and vocal delivery. Grace was on the World Cafe with David Dye recently; you can listen to that session here. Below, download the song “Battles” and watch the video for “I’ve Handled Myself Wrong.” She is performing at the North Star Bar on Wednesday, March 21st. More information here.
