Mostly known for her role as frontwoman for grunge-pop band Speedy Ortiz, Sadie Dupuis is slated to release her first solo album Slugger on November 11th under the moniker Sad13. She kicked off her debut tour on Thursday, and is paying Philadelphia a visit tonight at PhilaMOCA. Sad13’s music is largely centered around the idea of empowering women, and we’re all for it. Joining this Massachusetts synth-popper will be Philly artists Ivy Sole and Empath with NYC-based rapper Sammus topping off this stacked lineup. Local outfit Grubby Little Hands have released a video for “Michael” off of this year’s Garden Party LP. Paying tribute to the many great sites (and sights) of Philadelphia, the clip follows a business man as he lets loose after work.
Earlier this month, The Key’s Kate Bracaglia profiled psych-rockers Grubby Little Hands and their new album Garden Party. Today, the band shared the full stream of the album via Stereogum.
Garden Party is only slightly longer than a half-hour, but over the course of that half-hour the band crams in various interesting musical ideas from tape loops to harmonic vocal inflections. Songs like the bluesy “No Such Thing” and the lopsided “Balancing Act” take influences from musical styles such as classic rock and electronica. Continue reading →
There’s a striking image present on “Dial Tone,” the first track off Grubby Little Hands’ forthcoming record Garden Party. Amidst lush swirls of psychedelics, songwriters Donnie Felton and Brian Hall paint a picture of the perfect garden party—at a pristine spot with “elegant shadows.” There’s only one thing missing: the people. Instead, the party is seemingly automated: “The garden party starts right after we’re gone,” goes the chorus. “The automatic lights will turn themselves on.”
Read one way, it’s a metaphor for things not always being as they seem—a theme that recurs throughout Garden Party, which is built on the marriage of pop euphoria with dark subject matter. Read another way, it’s about the interplay between apathy and unease—about feeling disconnected, and going through the motions (another theme). But when you actually talk to the band—which I did, for this story—you start to realize there’s a third meaning too. It’s about time, and growth, and learning to take charge of your destiny.
