Recording under the name Heart Harbor, local musician Kerry Hallett is well-positioned to provide songs that heal and comfort. Her newest single “A Million Years” does just that, written in response to the tragic shooting in Orlando earlier this year and benefitting GALAEI Philadelphia, a queer/Latinx social justice organization.
Kerry Hallett has come a long way since her first-ever open mic at Atlantis: The Lost Bar in 2005. The Philadelphia-based singer, guitarist, songwriter and mastermind behind Heart Harbor has bounced between cities and coasts over the past decade and change, landing on a great batch of songs and the remarkable Tender Trap EP, which came out last autumn. Heart Harbor may have been celebrating the release of their Tender Trap EP at the Tin Angel a couple weeks ago, but that didn’t stop the project of Kerry Hallett from sharing some even newer songs. The as-yet unrecorded “Porcelain” is one such song, captured that night on video by Bob Sweeney.
So, you might have heard that night two of Key Fest is tonight. If you like punk/indie rock, it’s going to be awesome. If you like good music in general, it’s going to be awesome. But, this is Philly, which means there are always plenty of other concerts going on. Here are three other concerts happening tonight. Heart Harbor is the project of Kerry Hallet. But while Hallet is grounded by a singer-songwriter character, her music is recorded with a full band and is overflowing with catchy pop hooks. Think Aimee Mann but with a more upbeat, carefree sound. Hallet just released her debut EP, Tender Trap, and will be celebrating the occasion with a show at Tin Angel. Read Hallet’s conversation with The Key here, and grab tickets to the show over at the XPN Concert Calendar. Continue reading →
It’s not every day that a Facebook post from a nationally-renowned musician points you to an emerging artist from your own city. Last fall, Erin McKeown raved to her fans that she was very excited about the production work she was doing with the band Heart Harbor, who hails from right here in Philadelphia.
We here at The Key immediately checked the band out, and loved what we heard. The project of Kerry Hallett hearkens back to some of the best singer-songwriters in recent memory: Brandi Carlile, Passenger, Tegan and Sara, with a Jenny Lewis-ian sense of arrangement and fearless genre hopping. Recorded with McKeown last summer in Fishtown, the Tender Trap EP boasts immaculate production and infectious tunes; they’ll stick around, and you won’t mind one bit. Continue reading →
