Tonight’s Concert Picks: Kwesi Kankam at North Star Bar, Hot Guts at Kung Fu Necktie

KwesiKwesi Kankam is a singer-songwriter and photographer who has dropped a number of introspective, breathtaking tracks on Bandcamp in the past year. With a voice reminiscent of David Gray (with the same knack for sparse, haunting arrangements), Kankam’s latest offering is the acoustic number “By My Side,” released as a free download in advance of Valentine’s Day. Tonight he appears on the North Star Bar’s new music series showcase with Charles Keith Sztyk and This Old Ghost. The 21+ showcase begins at 7 p.m., more information at the XPN Concert Calendar. Below, download “By My Side.”

Primal Philly doom-rock outfit Hot Guts appear tonight at Kung Fu Necktie. Their 2012 LP Edges was driving and intense, with goth and drone flourishes, and the band is heading out on tour with SGNLS. The 21+ show with Philly’s The Chickens begins at 11 p.m., more information at the venue’s website. Below, listen to their song “Da’ rat Hessla,” recorded by Arc in Round’s Matt Ricchini and found on a 2010 split 7″ with Brooklyn’s Pop. 1280.

Philly Local Philes: Hot Guts’ “Da’rat Hessla”

Hot GutsThe long Halloween weekend left me craving some noise rock nihilism this morning. Enter Philly misanthropes Hot Guts. You might have caught their intense set opening for The Breeders at the First Unitarian Church back in September. Or perhaps you just heard us spin their Bauhaus-ish doom jam “Did You Not Go To The Dance Alone?” on Y-Rock. The four-piece has a new offering out on local label Badmaster Records, a split 7” with like-minded New Yorkers Pop. 1280; the Hot Guts side is somehow punchier and more paranoid than we’ve heard from them in the past. “Da’rat Hessla” has the pulse of Suicide’s “Ghost Rider,” the sonic girt of Cabaret Voltaire, and anguished vocals that will haunt you for days. U-City’s punk fraternity Pi Lam hosts both bands for the single’s release show on Sunday, Nov. 7; Soars from the Lehigh Valley (also favorites of The Key) round out the bill.
