Indie Rock Hit Parade Live Session: Diet Cig

Joining us in the studio for this latest Indie Rock Hit Parade session is the New York duo Diet Cig. Formed just a few years ago by guitarist Alex Luciano and drummer Noah Bowman, Diet Cig already find themselves surrounded by an adoring fanbase. It’s easy to understand why once you give a listen to their instantly likable debut album, Swear I’m Good At This, which was released earlier this year on Frenchkiss Records. Just before a show at PhilaMOCA, Diet Cig stopped by our studios to perform some favorites from the album.

Indie Rock Hit Parade Live Session: The Black Angels

For this latest Indie Rock Hit Parade live session, we’re joined in the studio by The Black Angels. The band has acted both as torchbearers of gloomy, doomy psychedelia as well as cornerstones of their hometown’s experimental music scene. Along with a stellar catalog of albums and EPs, The Black Angels are the head honchos of Levitation, the gathering formerly known as Austin Psych Fest. Armed with a special array of (mostly) acoustic instruments, The Black Angels beamed themselves into our studio to perform selections from their newest album, Death Song.

Joined by guitarist Nick Ventura, bassist Jeremy Katz and drummer Cameron Allen, Ashworth crafts ethereal pop songs with a ferocious wall-of-noise bite. Froth performs a selection of songs from Outside (briefly) in this session…

Indie Rock Hit Parade Live Session: Chaz Bundick Meets The Mattson 2

Chaz Bundick Meets The Mattson2 | Photo by Eric Schuman for WXPN

Our latest Indie Rock Hit Parade Live Session is with a trio of artists whose collaboration might take some explaining. Chaz Bundick has released several albums as Toro Y Moi (and one as Les Sins), and twin brothers Jonathan and Jared Mattson have released many of their own albums as the Mattson 2. When the Mattsons were opening for Toro Y Moi on a recent tour, talk of a collaboration naturally came up. Star Stuff, credited to Chaz Bundick Meets The Mattson 2, was released earlier this month through Bundick’s own Company Records. Combining Toro Y Moi’s pop/R&B leanings with the Mattson 2’s omnivorous eclecticism, the album is a collision of both artists’ finest. Early in the morning on Easter Sunday, Bundick and the Mattsons came to our studio to camp out and record a live session. Continue reading →

Indie Rock Hit Parade Live Session: Jay Som

For our latest Indie Rock Hit Parade Live Session, we were joined in the studio by Melina Duterte, the main brain behind Jay Som. The Oakland-based artist has been making music on her own for a few years, recently releasing her full-length debut on Polyvinyl, Everybody Works. Though all the parts on the album are played by Melina herself, she tours with a full band that features Oliver Pannell on guitar, Dylan Allard on bass and Zachary Elsasser on drums. Taking a short break before a show with The Courtneys, Jay Som dropped by to showcase how the meticulous studio tracks blossom in a live setting.

Indie Rock Hit Parade Live Session: Dude York

Our latest Indie Rock Hit Parade Live Session is with the Seattle trio Dude York! Gradually formed out of a lo-fi side project, Dude York released their second full-length, Sincerely, earlier this year on Hardly Art. The band’s penchant for hooky power pop is melded (and melted) with a veritable army of distortion pedals. The result is a sweet-and-sour approach to breakups, breakdowns and celebrating your own damn self.

For our first Indie Rock Hit Parade Live Session of 2017, we’re delighted to be joined by Carol Cleveland Sings. A multimedia pop group, CCS is formed around the duo of Thomas Hughes (The Spinto Band, The Music Tapes) and singer-songwriter Gretchen Lohse. Along with keyboardist/drum programmer Eric Hartman, Hughes and Lohse brought the music of their album Effervescent Lure to our studios.

Our latest Indie Rock Hit Parade Live Session is with Cleveland guitar-busters Cloud Nothings! Formed in 2009 as the bedroom-based solo project of guitarist Dylan Baldi, Cloud Nothings quickly evolved into a noise/punk/pop hybrid as its ranks grew to include permanent band members. Now featuring drummer Jayson Gerycz, bassist TJ Duke, and guitarist Chris Brown, Cloud Nothings are preparing to release their fourth full-length, Life Without Sound, in January 2017. While on a short warm-up tour in the late fall, Cloud Nothings came to our studios to record live takes of a few new tracks.

Indie Rock Hit Parade Live Session: Diarrhea Planet

Joining us in the studio for our newest Indie Rock Hit Parade Live Session is a hard-rocking, hard-partying six-piece from Nashville. Diarrhea Planet formed in 2009 and released their third full-length album, Turn To Gold, earlier this year on the Infinity Cat label. Outside of their, ahem, attention-grabbing name, DP’s most prominent feature is the stacked lineup of no less than four lead guitarists. Jordan Smith, Brent Toler and Emmett Miller (who also share songwriting and lead vocal duties) are joined by fourth axeman Evan Bird as well as the locked-in rhythm section of bassist Mike Boyle and drummer Ian “Tuff Gus” Bush. The result is a little bit like watching your best friends try to keep pace with one another as they pile on riffs and licks with increasing dexterity.

Our latest Indie Rock Hit Parade Live Session is a very, very special one. Formed in 2007 by sisters Katie and Allison Crutchfield, p.s. eliot released several albums, EPs and singles before disbanding a few short years later. Katie went on to record as Waxahatchee and Allison formed numerous bands of her own, including Swearin‘ (and she’s about to launch her solo career with backing band The Fizz). Reuniting for a string of tour dates (including two sold out stops at PhilaMOCA), p.s. eliot stopped by our studios to play songs from their career-spanning archival release 2007-2011. Joining to Crutchfield twins are guitarist Will Granger and bassist Katherine Simonetti.
