Indie Rock Hit Parade Live Session: Jay Som

For our latest Indie Rock Hit Parade Live Session, we were joined in the studio by Melina Duterte, the main brain behind Jay Som. The Oakland-based artist has been making music on her own for a few years, recently releasing her full-length debut on Polyvinyl, Everybody Works. Though all the parts on the album are played by Melina herself, she tours with a full band that features Oliver Pannell on guitar, Dylan Allard on bass and Zachary Elsasser on drums. Taking a short break before a show with The Courtneys, Jay Som dropped by to showcase how the meticulous studio tracks blossom in a live setting.

Indie Rock Hit Parade Live Session: Dude York

Our latest Indie Rock Hit Parade Live Session is with the Seattle trio Dude York! Gradually formed out of a lo-fi side project, Dude York released their second full-length, Sincerely, earlier this year on Hardly Art. The band’s penchant for hooky power pop is melded (and melted) with a veritable army of distortion pedals. The result is a sweet-and-sour approach to breakups, breakdowns and celebrating your own damn self.

For our first Indie Rock Hit Parade Live Session of 2017, we’re delighted to be joined by Carol Cleveland Sings. A multimedia pop group, CCS is formed around the duo of Thomas Hughes (The Spinto Band, The Music Tapes) and singer-songwriter Gretchen Lohse. Along with keyboardist/drum programmer Eric Hartman, Hughes and Lohse brought the music of their album Effervescent Lure to our studios.

Our latest Indie Rock Hit Parade Live Session is with Cleveland guitar-busters Cloud Nothings! Formed in 2009 as the bedroom-based solo project of guitarist Dylan Baldi, Cloud Nothings quickly evolved into a noise/punk/pop hybrid as its ranks grew to include permanent band members. Now featuring drummer Jayson Gerycz, bassist TJ Duke, and guitarist Chris Brown, Cloud Nothings are preparing to release their fourth full-length, Life Without Sound, in January 2017. While on a short warm-up tour in the late fall, Cloud Nothings came to our studios to record live takes of a few new tracks.

Joining us in the studio for our newest Indie Rock Hit Parade Live Session is a hard-rocking, hard-partying six-piece from Nashville. Diarrhea Planet formed in 2009 and released their third full-length album, Turn To Gold, earlier this year on the Infinity Cat label. Outside of their, ahem, attention-grabbing name, DP’s most prominent feature is the stacked lineup of no less than four lead guitarists. Jordan Smith, Brent Toler and Emmett Miller (who also share songwriting and lead vocal duties) are joined by fourth axeman Evan Bird as well as the locked-in rhythm section of bassist Mike Boyle and drummer Ian “Tuff Gus” Bush. The result is a little bit like watching your best friends try to keep pace with one another as they pile on riffs and licks with increasing dexterity.

Our latest Indie Rock Hit Parade Live Session is a very, very special one. Formed in 2007 by sisters Katie and Allison Crutchfield, p.s. eliot released several albums, EPs and singles before disbanding a few short years later. Katie went on to record as Waxahatchee and Allison formed numerous bands of her own, including Swearin‘ (and she’s about to launch her solo career with backing band The Fizz). Reuniting for a string of tour dates (including two sold out stops at PhilaMOCA), p.s. eliot stopped by our studios to play songs from their career-spanning archival release 2007-2011. Joining to Crutchfield twins are guitarist Will Granger and bassist Katherine Simonetti.

Joining us for this latest Indie Rock Hit Parade Live Session is the Philly/Wilmington garage combo Scantron! Originally formed as the trio of Will Donnelly, James Everhart and George M. Murphy, Scantron recently added bassist Lucas Rinz as a permanent member. More than just a band (or just one band, for that matter), the boys also serve as producers and studio whiz-kids, working on records for other local underground bands. Additionally, most of the members pull double duty as players in Low Cut Connie and Satellite Hearts. In fact, Low Cut Connie’s Larry Scotton Jr. joins in the fun playing keyboards in our session.

Our latest Indie Rock Hit Parade live session features the Los Angeles trio La Sera! La Sera formed as the solo project for bassist/singer Katy Goodman, back when she was performing with another trio, Vivian Girls. Goodman’s since released four albums under the La Sera name, each one showcasing a new set of styles and influences. The newest record, Music For Listening To Music To, was released earlier this year on Polyvinyl. The album is perhaps La Sera’s boldest statement, with its rollicking production supplied by Ryan Adams. Goodman, along with guitarist/singer Todd Wisenbaker (who produced La Sera’s previous album, Hour Of The Dawn) and drummer Brendan McCusker dropped by our studios between shows in New York and Washington, DC.

Indie Rock Hit Parade Live Session: Tacocat

It took us long enough, but it’s finally here: our first Indie Rock Hit Parade live session of 2016! This time, we were joined by the Seattle band Tacocat! The band formed back around 2008, and just released their third album, Lost Time. The album features the band’s smart and witty lyrics about a variety of topics including yuppies, The X-Files, internet commenters and more. Couple those with taut and fizzy instrumentation and you’ve got a record that’s as vivid as the band members themselves.
