Tonight’s Concert Pick: Joe Pug and Hezekiah Jones at Johnny Brenda’s (download a free EP from Pug)

joe-pug

With tonight’s Bassnectar and Limp Bizkit shows sold out, and John Medeski’s World Cafe Live show postponed until next December, it makes tonight’s pick pretty easy. Chicago’s folk hero Joe Pug plays a 21+ show at Johnny Brenda’s tonight, along with one of our most favorite local singer-songwriters Hezekiah Jones. Joe Pug plays a brand of folk with a Dylanesque focus on lyrical content, and Hezekiah Jones has his own unique style of story-telling. Go here for tickets to the show. Below, download Pug’s In The Meantime EP for free.

Download a free sampler from Joe Pug (playing Johnny Brenda’s on 5/1)

PugIt’s not really a surprise that Chicago’s Joe Pug used to be a carpenter and playwright student before taking up music full-time.  Not when just one listen to his 2008 debut Nation of Heat EP or either of his full lengths reveals a rugged, hard-worn voice and delicately precise guitar picking, with lyrics composed with as much thought and attention to detail as it would take to build a house.  Since his debut in 2008, Pug has toured with friend and Philadelphia favorite Strand of Oaks, music legend Levon Helm and was signed to Lightning Rod Records in advance of his 2010 LP Messenger.  Currently, Pug is touring behind last year’s follow-up album The Great Despiser.  Tickets and information for his 21+ show at Johnny Brenda’s on May 1st can be found here.  Below, watch Joe Pug perform “Hymn #101” and download a free five track sampler in exchange for your email address.

Strand Of Oaks releases a new 7-inch split single with Joe Pug

Philly’s Strand Of Oaks and Chicago singer-songwriter Joe Pug set off on a 47-date tour starting March 31st. (The Philly show is Thursday, April 14th at Johnny Brenda’s.) To celebrate the tour, the pair decided to release a 7-inch tour single in which they cover each other’s songs; Pug covers Strand Of Oaks’ “End In Flames”, and Strand Of Oaks records Pug’s “Hymn #101” (which you can listen to below). And in case you missed it, listen to and download songs from The Key Studio Session we did with Strand Of Oaks last December here.
