Singer-songwriter John Fullbright released his remarkably accomplished album, From The Ground Up last May. He appeared on World Cafe with David Dye in December of 2012; you can listen to the session here. When John visited the Cafe one of the songs he performed was an incredible version of “Satan and St. Paul” that you can stream or download it below. The song is from a new, free collection of Cafe performances available for a very limited time during the month of February. Each weekday during the month World Cafe will offer one free song from a recent session. By February 22 there will be 20 new exclusive songs for you to enjoy. Here’s the catch: They are ONLY going to be available for the month, on March 1 they will disappear! XPN Welcomes a Holiday Concert with The Gathering featuring Rhiannon Giddens at Sellersville tonight. The string band’s enchanting harmonies weave a different set of carols to celebrate the yuletide. The Gathering, which is Rhiannon Giddens of the Carolina Chocolate Drops, Laurelyn Dossett, Mike Compton, Joe Newberry, and Jason Sypher, started playing together in 2011 as a seasonal project of the North Carolina Symphony. Their reputation escalated and they were soon being commissioned for more performances, finding their own among the embrace of holiday tours. Local indie newcomers Young Statues and Heartwell will be playing tonight at The Barbary. Stream The Young Statues’ brand new four-track Covers EP, which features a subdued, Death Cab-esque version of The Magnetic Fields’ hit “California Girls,” or you can grab the band’s acoustic EP at your own price here. Heartwell, the New Jersey punk outfit, followed up their 2011 On Strings, On Science EP this June with their debut full-length record, Certainty of Change, which you can stream here. Bethlehem pop/punk duo Slingshot Dakota is rocking The Fire tonight hot off the release of their new Dark Hearts album, which dropped November 6th. Slingshot Dakota’s raw DIY sound comes from Carly Comando on keyboard and vocals and Tom Patterson on drums and vocals. Tonight’s concert starts at 7; go here for tickets. XPN Welcomes John Fullbright to the Tin Angel tonight. This year the Oklahoma native wowed audiences with a series of remarkable performances at SXSW, the Kerrville Folk Festival and Woody Guthrie Folk Festival. With the release of his extraordinary debut studio album From The Ground Up, which earned a Grammy nod for Best American Album, and being recognized for the 2012 ASCAP Harold Adamson Lyric Award, this is only the beginning of a star to watch. Brooklyn world music collective Antibalas is performing tonight at Union Transfer. The funky ensemble draws from afrobeat with jazz and dub elements and has been performing together since 1998. Their cool drum-meets-horn fusion emits a unique energy, which can be heard on their epoonymously-titled fifth album, released earlier this year. British singer-songwriter Matthew Hegarty began recording and performing as Matthew and the Atlas in 2010 with a full five-piece band, releasing a couple of EPs and touring the U.K. and the U.S. with Mumford & Sons before scaling back to an intimate one-man show late last year. Currently on tour with John Fullbright, Matthew and the Atlas will be stopping by Steel City Coffeehouse in Phoenixville on Sunday, October 21st. For tickets and more information, click here. The 51st Annual Philadelphia Folk Festival kicked off last night with an opening night campers-only concert featuring a taping of Live at the World Cafe with Oklahoma singer-songwriter John Fullbright, a raucous set from Rev. Peyton’s Big Damn Band that culminated in a flaming washboard, and drinking songs from The Fighting Jamesons. 23 year old singer-songwriter John Fullbright was raised and still lives in Okemah, Oklahoma, birthplace of Woody Guthrie. On Fullbright’s new album, From The Ground Up, he draws on the tradition of Guthrie along with some of Fullbright’s earliest songwriting heroes like Townes Van Zandt and Mickey Newbury. From The Ground Up is a remarkably accomplished record from a gifted up and coming story teller. This week, Fullbright’s album is WXPN’s Featured Album of The Week. Writing about the album, WXPN’s Mike Vasilikos says: “In a time where there is no short supply of guys with guitars, John Fullbright will grab your attention as a commanding singer, clever lyricist and earnest songwriter.” Fullbright performs this Thursday night at the Philadelphia Folk Festival where he will record a World Cafe performance with Cafe host David Dye.
