Get theatrical with Julia Holter’s new video “In The Green Wild” (playing World Cafe Live on Saturday)

Julia HolterExperimental pop artist Julia Holter has released two albums to date and is gearing up to release her third, Loud City Song, on August 20th.  Her latest LP is a bit of a concept album, built around the adventures of a main character.  This week she released the a video for a song off the album called “In The Green Wild” which features this character leaving the big city for some nature in a sort of bizarre theater performance.  The song slowly builds from a quiet and smokey jazz number into a bright almost-pop song.  Check out the video below and be sure to catch Holter this saturday at World Cafe Live with Jessica Pratt.

Julia Holter

In advance of her forthcoming For Loud City Song LP, Julia Holter has shared a new video for lead single “World.”  The video is a beautiful pairing of sped-up montage footage showing Holter walking through her hometown of Los Angeles and the hushed, barely-there musings of the musician.  Visually, it’s like an experimental film that was discovered with missing pieces.  It feels like a narrative, but parts of the story aren’t there and it never resolves, leaving the viewer feeling unsettled.  That feeling becomes even more unsettling when Holter leaves us with the question “How can I escape you?”.  For Loud City Song will be released through Domino Records on August 19th.  Julia Holter will be in town on July 11th with Jessica Pratt at World Cafe Live upstairs; tickets and information can be found here.  Watch the new video for “World” below.

Listen to Julia Holter’s interview and performance on XPN2

Last month, experimental electronic performer Julia Holter made her debut Philadelphia appearance at the new Underground Arts venue. Before arriving at the show, she stopped by XPN2 to record a studio session, re-imagining the heady layered tapestries of her RVNG Int’l Records debut Extasis as solitary, stunning pieces sung over a Rhodes keyboard. Now you can stream the session and hear Holter’s interview with XPN2’s John Vettese, where she talks about adapting her complex music for solo performances, gives insight into her songwriting process and shares the difficulties of gardening near her Los Angeles home.
