Aja Graydon and Fatin Dantzler sit beside each other in their studio near 60th Street and Baltimore Avenue in Southwest Philly. Their creative space is painted sky blue and is home to an old piano, keyboards, racks of clothing from local Philly designers ,and sketches and abstract oil paintings of the duo.

Before they were noted neo-soul artists, Kindred the Family Soul, were two musicians waiting on their big break. The two met during a studio session with The Roots in New York City. Continue reading →

Tonight’s Concert Picks: Cliff Hillis with Modern Inventors at World Cafe Live, M83 at Electric Factory, Zeus with Juston Stens at North Star, and Kindred the Family Soul at @ World Café at the Queen

Tonight singer-songwriter Cliff Hillis celebrates the release of his latest album, Dream Good, with an official Philly record release show upstairs at World Cafe Live. The album is Hillis’ first release in three years and the show includes a performance by the Philly indie rock band Modern Inventors (who recently recorded with WXPN’s Helen Leicht on Leicht Lunch). French electronic band M83 are bringing their ambient vibes to the Electric Factory before they head to Lollapalooza and then continue their extensive three month-long U.S. tour. The all-ages show starts at 8PM and features support from Big Black Delta. Tickets are $40.40 and can be purchased here. Toronto band Zeus are headlining a show at the North Star Bar tonight along with Juston Stens & The Get Real Gang (featuring Juston Stens formerly of Dr. Dog) and Megan Reilly. The 21+ show starts at 8PM and tickets are available here for $10.

Finally, Philadelphia natives/married couple/musical duo Fatin Dantzler and Aja Graydon (AKA Kindred the Family Soul) are bringing their soulful sound to World Cafe at the Queen in Wilmington tonight at 8PM. Reserved seats for are sold out, but general admission tickets are still available for $29 here.

The Roots premiered the first of a series of new videos for songs from their forthcoming album undun on Okayplayer yesterday. The album is being released on December 6th. From Okayplayer:

Here is the first of four videos from The Roots undun, the next three to be released at 12:06pm the next three Tuesdays leading up to release on 12/06. Watch the clip for “Make My” above and stay tuned for “Stomp” next week.

Okayplayer also premiered a new video from the husband-wife soul music duo Kindred The Family Soul. The video is the song “Take A Look Around” from their album Love Has No Recession. The video features Philly’s Bilal and BJ The Chicago Kid. Watch the video below.

The folks at Okayplayer tipped us to one of these new songs below from Philly’s Kindred The Family Soul. The husband-wife soul-music duo of Fatin Dantzler and Aja Graydon are releasing a new album on July 26th called Love Has No Recession. Some of the guests on the record include Philly’s Bilal, Rich Medina, Lady Alma Horton and Ursula Rucker. Washington DC’s “Father of Go-Go” Chuck Brown makes an appearance and below, listen to “We All Know” featuring Raheem DeVaughn and “You Got Love” featuring Snoop Dogg.
