South Jersey / Philly indie outfit By Surprise open The Trocadero tonight for ’90s hardcore band Piebald. Noting Piebald as one of their favorite bands, By Surprise has had a solid year playing shows with some of the bands that inspired their career, most recently Motion City Soundtrack’s final show in NYC. Local indie rockers DRGN King kick-off a nearly two-month long, cross-country tour at Johnny Brenda’s tonight. They also helped to kick-off the 2015 season of Free at Noons, “skipping their day jobs” to rile up the crowd at World Cafe Live back in January. They performed songs from their recent Baltimore Crush LP (which you can learn more about here), as well as tracks taken from their 2013 debut Paragraph Nights. Aja Graydon and Fatin Dantzler sit beside each other in their studio near 60th Street and Baltimore Avenue in Southwest Philly. Their creative space is painted sky blue and is home to an old piano, keyboards, racks of clothing from local Philly designers ,and sketches and abstract oil paintings of the duo.
Tonight singer-songwriter Cliff Hillis celebrates the release of his latest album, Dream Good, with an official Philly record release show upstairs at World Cafe Live. The album is Hillis’ first release in three years and the show includes a performance by the Philly indie rock band Modern Inventors (who recently recorded with WXPN’s Helen Leicht on Leicht Lunch). French electronic band M83 are bringing their ambient vibes to the Electric Factory before they head to Lollapalooza and then continue their extensive three month-long U.S. tour. The all-ages show starts at 8PM and features support from Big Black Delta. Tickets are $40.40 and can be purchased here. Finally, Philadelphia natives/married couple/musical duo Fatin Dantzler and Aja Graydon (AKA Kindred the Family Soul) are bringing their soulful sound to World Cafe at the Queen in Wilmington tonight at 8PM. Some of the guests on the record include Philly’s Bilal, Rich Medina, Lady Alma Horton and Ursula Rucker.
