It’s time once again for WXPN’s annual 12 Days Of Local Christmas, our holiday gift of song from artists in the local music scene. XPN mid-day and Philly Local host Helen Leicht reached out to a number of local musicians to write original holiday songs. Each weekday through Christmas we’ll be offering these songs to you for free, compliments of the bands to download. We’ll play them on WXPN for our My Morning Download feature with XPN’s Morning Show host Michaela Majoun in the 9AM ET hour and on Helen’s Philly Local pick of the day in the 1PM ET hour. Some of this year’s artists include Amos Lee, Creem Circus, Dana Alexandra and Lily Mae.

Today, we start the 12 Days with 1980s Philly scene vet Larry Saklad doing a rendition of “Christmas on the Block,” a 1983 single from Alan Mann and the Free Arts Band. Saklad was Mann’s piano player, and is involved in a 30th anniversary tribute to the single happening at The Legendary Dobbs on December 22nd. Download the song and watch the original 1983 music video below.

Today’s My Morning Download: Larry Saklad covers Alan Mann’s “Christmas On The Block”

Local musician Alan Mann was a part of the local scene from the mid-Seventies until his death in October 1987. Along with The Hooters, Tommy Conwell, Robert Hazard, Kenn Kweeder and others, Mann was a staple of the scene and in the mid-Eighties released the single “Christmas On The Block” which received a lot of airplay on WMMR. The video for the song (watch below) was also aired on MTV. Larry Saklad was a member of Mann’s Free Arts Band and recently re-recorded the song with Kweeder and Kim De Meo to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the release of the song. Download it below.
