It’s been an interesting road for Laura Jane Grace. From the punk-folk star with Against Me! to a transgender icon, there is a richness and unique history that she is currently creating. Playing mostly stripped down songs from Against Me!’s catalog, the songs not only took on deeper meaning, but also incurred a more intense listening that was evident by the perfectly-silent crowd at World Cafe Live at the Queen. Pinegrove just released their great new album Cardinal yesterday, and they are bringing it to The Petting Zoo tonight. Their introspective indie rock is sure to bring fire to the Zoo basement, and it may be one of the last times they will play such an intimate setting (the venues will only get bigger for them). Laura Jane Grace, best known as the guitarist/vocalist of Florida punks Against Me!, has been an avid journal keeper. Her earliest journals date back to age 7 or 8, and since then, she’s forged a powerful career in punk rock and activism. Now, she’s preparing a book based on her long history of journaling, and, like anyone who’s sat writing in front of a computer screen for a few hours (or years), she needs to step away.

“I’ve been working on a book for the last couple of years and kind of getting close to finishing it—hopefully it’ll be out later this year,” Grace says. “About a year ago, I was just, like, losing my mind from sitting in front of a computer screen writing, and I wanted to try to work some of [the book’s content] out in a live context.”

Grace (along with Against Me! drummer Atom Willard and manager Marc Hudson) is playing a series of stripped-down shows as Laura Jane Grace and the Devouring Mothers. She says her show at the First Unitarian Church on Saturday will be full of music, stories and readings from her book. Continue reading →

Laura Jane Grace of Against Me! is embarking on a short acoustic solo tour, and she’ll be stopping by Milkboy tonight to play some new material. Against Me! is releasing their new record, Transgender Dysphoria Blues sometime this year, which explores a lot of the struggles Grace (formerly Tom Gabel) went through as a transgender woman. To preview the album, Grace will be making the True Trans 7″ available on tour. Check out a performance of the new track “True Trans Soul Rebel” below.

Listen to Against Me!’s True Trans Rebel EP (Laura Jane Grace plays Milkboy 8/10)

Last week, the first new Against Me! material in a few years saw the light of day.  While a full concept album Transgender Dysphoria Blues is in the works, Against Me! released a two-song EP on Tuesday featuring two brand new acoustic songs, “FuckMyLife666” and “True Trans Rebel Soul.”  The two songs are incredibly intimate acoustic ballads featuring nothing more than frontwoman Laura Jane Grace and her acoustic guitar.  This is perhaps some of the group’s best work to date and you can download it for free below.  And if you want a chance to see these songs performed live, Laura Jane Grace is embarking on a small solo tour specifically built around the new album, which includes a stop at Milkboy on August 10th.
